Been looking into Michigan Tech university in Houghton, does anyone have any experience in the ecology or forestry studies? What are your options about this school?

Can't comment on the two programs you mentioned: but always considered their engineering curriculum top notch. Have friends that graduated their program. MTU engineering students were great competition in events when I was in school

Sorry I can’t help with the programs mentioned. I’ve worked with many engineers over the years that have graduated from there. Electrical, mechanical, mining and civil. All were top notch engineers. As mentioned above, bring your snowshoes!! Going to MTU will allow you to experience and live in an area where many people dream of taking a vacation! I love living in the UP!

Michigan Tech is a great school. Bunch of friends went there. I went down the road to Northern Michigan in Marquette. Another solid school. Got my degree in Environmental Conservation.

Going to school in the UP isn't for everyone though. Winters are long. Cool area with a lot of outdoorsy opportunities. Not so much on store/shops/restaurants/amenities.

Keep in mind, Tech is like 70% guys to 30% girls. Also, not sure about natural sciences, but the engineering programs are halfway tough from a academic standpoint. Have to bring your "A" game.

Good luck. Choose wisely. cool

I went to MTU. Civil engineering.
My buddies sons both graduated in Forestry.
They both have very good jobs, one in Wisconsin and the other in Minesota.
Its all about the work you put in at the school.
The winters are tough. The summers are great.

A lot of those jobs are getting very hard to get into even with a bachelor's degree. Make sure you absolutely love it and are willing move anywhere and live on a low pay/ season hours for your first couple years at least. The less sexy specializations have more room. Grassland science majors are pretty sought after out in these parts, especially because its so remote.

I graduated from Ranger School and it is a unique educational experience. You will earn every one of the 70 credit hours you receive during the year you spend there. Transferring to a 4 year program is not a.problem.

I would of went there for School except I would have never graduated. Way to much hunting, fishing and trapping going on. I moved to the UP after I finished Military and College.

I am pretty sure they did if I remember right. It was changed a couple years after I was done.

Are you looking at this from a financial perspective or something else? If you're primarily seeking an outdoor type college experience the UP is a great place to be.

But without more information I'm not sure that the school would necessarily be the best financial pick. Are you certain that you want to spend out of state tuition on the degree? Will you be receiving scholarships, etc? I'm not well versed in the fields you are considering and what the job market looks like. But I'd want to know if there were similar programs in Missouri that would be just as cost effective or if Mich Tech is that much better to justify the out of state cost tuition. Will the Mich Tech degree give you an immediate advantage in your paycheck at a bachelor degree level?

When you start thinking longer term, you need to understand if an advanced degree is going to be a requirement to provide career advancement in forestry/ecology down the road. If so, then academic ranking of schools and specific programs becomes a consideration for acceptance in graduate studies. If you are thinking of moving to a northern state for the undergrad regardless, you might want to do a cost comparison with University of Wisconsin as that system is held in pretty high regards academically and then see if you can tell if there are ranking differences between the two forestry programs
