Beans and rice, rice and beans. Keep chickens around for eggs. I have a lot of servings of rice and beans. Mix in some meat and you have a fine meal

Those will be much better tasting birds too.
About the only things I have extra is I went ahead and bought the meats and fixings for Thanksgiving and Christmas so I'm not stuck serving bologna for them,,, not that there's anything wrong with bologna if you're into that sort of thing. We just prefer turkey and ham for those occasions. [/quote] Thank you for buying turkey.

Distilled water and apple cider vinegar are the 2 things I can hardly find enough of right now. Pretty basic stuff, right there. Distilled water might be somewhat of a luxury, but, water is life. To be truly prepared you need to be able to purify any water. Filters and stills might work. But, the better choice might be the still. It might be time consuming, but, with a wood fired still you should have all the water you need. While not currently not legal; you could make alcohol, for sanitizing, fuel, barter, and even a little sipping. Vinegar, too, is a basic multiuse product. It can be used for cooking, cleaning, preserving foods, and tons more. If you can find it, grab it. It lasts forever, and won't go to waste.

Big pot of water with a rounded lid. Boil water and put a bowl 1/3 smaller than the pot diameter inside it (let it float). Put the lid on upside down and the steam will collect on it and drip into the bowl = distilled water.
The basics are food, water, shelter and with winter coming a way to heat the shelter....also warm clothes and ways to procure food/water.
If we find ourselves having to make our own safe water.....depending on where you live the lake/pond/stream/river water may contain pesticides and chemicals...Sawyer makes a 'select' series of pre filters S1, S2 and S3....they all utilize a micro squeeze filter but the S1 pre filters chemicals/pesticides...the S2 adds viruses and the S3 adds heavy metals so theS3 does chemicals, viruses, heavy metals and the micro squeeze does the giardia and cryptosporidium ..the pre filter is a squeeze bottle that holds 20 ounces..it has a life of 1600 uses....something that many people do not think about is being able to get these other things out of water and there are many forever chemicals and pesticides in some water sources.
Midway has these filters for pretty good price and you can get the S1 bottle as a replacement without the micro squeeze (the micro has a much longer life)...

It takes a lot of fuel to distill anything. collecting rainwater with a tarp and buckets is good. save on fuel and filters both. fuel might could get real scarce. down spout from your roof is possible if you have a shake roof or metal roof. asphalt shingles might not be a good idea for water collection. if your close to the source for creeks boiling is good or even just uv light. six hours in a clear glass jar in full sunlight will kill bacteria and virus. pouring water through a filter of charcoal under sand under gravel will get out insects and a lot of dirt.
