Morning Trappers!

I finally got my second catch but it’s a skunk and in a box trap. I had a few questions.

1) I’ve heard about shooting it in the lungs to reduce the chance of spraying; is this just an old trapper’s tale?

2) If I shoot it, how long should I wait to handle the carcass?

3) Do I deodorize the fur before skinning?

4) If I get sprayed, what’s the best method of scent removal?

Im going to do my best to just release it if I feel I can’t properly harvest the fur. I just don’t want to go back into work after vacation smelling like Pepe Le Pew.

Just asume youll get some skunk on you no matter what you do.
No need to wait to handle the skunk or deodorize prior, see above.

Lookup the hydrogen peroxide/baking soda/dish soap formula for removing skunk smell.

1 Qt Hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda
1 good squirt of liquid dish soap
Results are instant and spectacular
Don't try to save any leftovers, the container will blow up from CO2 buildup

Look up Natures Miracle Skunk Deodorizer on Amazon. Grantee it works and no shelf life like what BigBob posted up (although that works too.) I keep a spray bottle in every vehicle for the times my dog beats me to the set.

If I had to pick between a Fox, coon with 3 possums thrown in together or one jumbo Pepe I’d take the skunk and be excited about it. LOL

Is this a spray bottle thing, or dip? Any insight appreciated!

Its more of a pour over or wet rag n scrub. I guesa you could put it in a spray bottle if you can spray it fast enough before it pops your bottle.

The hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, dish soap solution works great. I mix up a double batch in a pail a soak 4 skunk pelts at a time. Then rinse in clean water, let the fur dry, and flesh. No stink. I suppose you could dip or soak any clothing or tools in this formula to deodorize it too.
