Approached one of my sets today to find a catch circle but no coyote. 99% sure it might’ve been a toe catch or something where the coyote got out. A lot of rain here so it’s a mess. My question is, even though it got away, would you still reset as a normal catch circle or do you think I just have one more educated coyote?

Reset and a fresh set close by with a different smell.
And he is educated, but he'll still step in a blind set.

Check the trap. If it has a shine to it it may have been a coon as you can tell by the scratch pattern and claw markings. They are different than a coyote's as he will use bigger teeth and marks it less than a coon. PA. is notorious for coons showing up about anywhere on a regular basis and if it was a toe catch of a coyote he may have left it somewhere in the circle. Check when it dries up................. the mike

Stretch the trap out. Look at where the catch circle ends compared to the distance you can stretch the chain. The catch circle on a coyote generally extends quite a bit farther than a coon could reach…
