The only squirrel classed as a furbearer in N America is the red squirrel. There has always been a market for them, occasionally a good strong market.
Not sure if the other squirrels are marketable for some other use.
Possibly craft or taxi market.
Red squirrels for the fur market are handled fur in.I form them on female mink boards.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

This right here. Gray squirrels can be marketed for their tails. There is somebody now on trap shed looking for tails.

Sometimes fly fishing shops will buy squirrel tails and pelts. The fur is used for the bodies of nymphs and the tail fur for streamers and such things.

This might sound nuts, but I figure the best camo for hunting up in a tree stand is probably squirrel pelt. I have 7 tanned so far, plan on making a hunting cape. Lots of squirrel for that. I eat some of them and mix the ones I don't eat in with venison for cat food.

Also, I had an issue with my first attempt at alum paste tanning with a deer and 7 squirrel come out stiff. The deer is a rug to keep my wife's feet warm so that's fine. I broke the heck out of the squirrel and they are plyable enough to sew. I did another deer skin, left the paste on 2x longer, and the difference is night and day. As soon as I get 7 squirrel pelts ready to go I am going to try an alum immersion tan as opposed to the paste. I also have another deer hide to tan so I am going to try that immersion alum as well. I am going to order some sulphonated neatsfoot from probably Van Dykes, but I believe I have figured out how to make my own.
