They is!

Granny Smiths are alot tarter than the Whinesaps used in the other pies. I bit into one on the way home and they make a feller pucker-up ill tell ya!

Cooked in a pie, they're perfect tho!!

If you got a granny smith tree and your weather permits let them hang for a month. An entirely different apple. They mellow out and lose most of the tart and sweeten. They also lose the green. I don't know if they do the same in storage though.

Thanks for that info ! I have wondered if other fruits are as huckleberries here. People are so used to picking them in mid summer. I like to wait til October, towards the end of the month, when the high places have had frost . The bushes are bright red and those berries are a rick indigo blue , and as sweet as can be. I pick them by the gallon then. Love the sweetened taste , not a tangy one among them.

The tartness is what I like about them for pies. The sweet and tart contrast is what makes the pie. Ones that are just sweet sweet aren't as good in my opinion.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. I actually discovered that by a lazy accident one year I didn't feel like picking and putting up. I let them go until almost Christmas when I noticed them still on the tree and still sound so had to investigate.

grin Mine was that the high ridge mountaintop that is loaded with berries , also is my long range shooting area with my Weatherby. The terrain is either way steep or treed heavily until I get up high enough from the treeline. Or at least til they thin out enough to where I can walk the ridge setting up my targets . Of course I had to wait til berry pickers were out of there , which is always by the end of August , beginning September.

Thats when I discovered the berries ...they just popped with rich indigo colour, not the classic tinged reddish purples in summer. It was like biting into small peaches , they were so sweet !

I was hooked !

Also the red bushes , crystal clear air quality , cool temps up that high and all the colours up and down the jagged slopes of tamarack , aspen and cottonwood is a sight to behold for hours . I always hate to leave from up that high.

A good accidental discovery !
