I had two stepdown dirtholes in the corner of a field where hayfield, hardwoods, and a crep project come together with a road going into the woods. This morning one set had no action but the other had the trap snapped and at the end of the chain which I would usually write off as deer, but the hole was dug out rediculously big which a deer wouldnt do. What do you think happened?

Deer stepped on it earlier in the night
And then your hole was dug up by something else
Tracks in the dirt should give a clue

When that happens to me I usually credit it to Mick, Lee or Danny trying to figure out what bait I'm using. Lee being the sneak one of the bunch usually tries to make a catch circle to throw me off.Danny will leave some deer hair or rabbit foot in trap, Mick just uncovers part of trap so he doesn't get caught. Don't think they have figured out what I do to their sets in retaliation yet....

Now that's funny!

Deer may have snapped in, then a coyote or fox came by. Or the coyote smelled your trap (or more likely it wobbled) and he dug it up, snapped it, then dug the dirt hole. There's no telling. Reset and if it happens again, put two traps there. wink
