I've been trapping beaver for a few years and I'm hoping to move into doing a little trapping for fox and lynx as well. I have plenty of 330's on hand, as well as a dozen or so 3/32 snares. I'm hoping to use beaver meat as bait and make some cubbyhole sets with the 330's and set snares on the trails. I have a few questions.

1. Do I need to let the beaver taint some, or can I use fresh whole carcasses (quarters and backstraps removed).
2. Would it be better to grind it and add glycerine and a little castor? I don't have a dedicated grinder and I'm not sure I want to put tainted meat through my good one. Especially beaver considering their parasite load.
3. I've seen a few fox catches in 330's, but most of the information for fox trapping online deals with footholds. Does anyone have preferred sets for fox with 330's/1216's or snares?

Thanks

Don’t overthink the bait. Once cold weather hits nearly anything looks good to a fox. I’d take an axe and chop the surface of the bait a bit though. I’ve found it makes the animals more likely to take the bait knowing they can get a few easy mouthfuls compared to a solid chunk. Lynx and fox have no problems following your walking trails especially when the snow gets deep so make some trails, throw some bait out and set snares on your trails. I’ve had good success with bucket sets for fox. I like to put them under some overhanging grass. I do prefer footholds though.

I have caught fox in 330s in a hole before. Snares are way more effective though, safer and easier.

Find some thick brush and throw one of your froze beavers down and chop it up some with an axe like Ryan mentioned scatter frozen pieces around. It gets them eating it faster. Let them hit it for a night or two and then set up the trails with snares.

#2,#3 Bridgers work great for lynx. Set on tracks. Use a goose or duck wing on a string with a small piece of pink surveyor's tape attached to it head high to a lynx and set a trap below it. Cover lightly with snow.

No bait or lure needed.

Good luck

Don't use baited 330s if there are any dogs nearby or dog walkers around. Traps and snares are better for fox. The 330s might be Ok for lynx. For both fox and lynx I would recommend 1/16th cable.

Set some pass through type sets this week with a 330 on one entrance and a snare on the other. Also tried throwing all the remaining carcasses in heavy brush thing and I'll be back in a few days to check the ones I set and put snares on the trails around the carcasses. Thanks for the suggestions!
