The wolves here are quite happy to haul away an otter carcass. Wolverine, too.

Just doing what I want now.

I’ve seen porcupine eaten by wolverine before. Eaten from the belly and all that’s left is a neat little shell of hair and quills. Got a few wolves full of quills too

I took my dog Musky up to the gravel pit one time. He spotted a porkypine and went to town. Before I got him off of it he was al quilled up.

Great pictures and stories I enjoy your post a great deal HFT !

I also wish I had a dollar for every fox , coyote and from time to time even bobcat that had porcupine quills under their hide .
It appeared as if they would roll on them for whatever reason , interesting behavior for sure .

That's a good amount of bait! I must live in hungry country. Every carcass I throw out gets eaten.

Too bad about the moose poacher, hope they nab him.

We had a dork down here by Anchor Point that got caught doing that last year during hunting season. He kept shooting moose that were sub-legal, and then leaving them lay. Pretty trigger happy. Eventually it caught up with him. Hope they get the poacher. Let us know if they do. Should be newsworthy. In some ways I could see someone poaching a moose out in the boonies if they were desperate and starving and would put it to good use, but just cutting off the head and leaving it? Yup. String em up, figuratively speaking. Anyways I'm sure you will put the moose bait to good use. Hoping for something similar down in my neck of the woods.

Porkies make pretty good bobcat bait down here. As a kid I trapped a lot of them with 330's in cubby sets.

I can't believe that cop put me in the back seat when I clearly called shotgun.

It seemed otter carcasses never got touched on the dump pile. Not even the ravens, but they would eat coyotes, fox, and lynx all day long out of the same pile.

Caught an ermine one year with a porky quill through his foot and another into his midsection.

I trap quite a few fatty otter every year and the carcasses NEVER make it back out into the field. Birds won’t even touch them and I’m in some hungry country..

I would loose at least half a dozen traps a year without my metal detector.

Very interesting about otter carcasses. Here, I dump them, they are gone next visit. Typically wolf tracks all around.
Birds pick at them, but the wolves carry the whole thing off.
Same with wolverine.

I've never used porky for bait, but I know here fisher, marten, bobcat and lion all hunt, kill, and eat them. By the way they go out of their way to get them, they appear to consider porky a delicacy. All will start eating them from the belly side, and I've seen where bobcats have eat them and left a perfect skin, with the feet still in, but cleaner of flesh than I would skin, without a hole in it.

Otters on the other hand, can lay in a pile of bait and while everything else is gobbled, remain completely untouched. They will eventually melt down, long after everything else is ate or packed off, but nothing will touch an otter here, maggots will barely eat them.

Well I am beginning to think the weather channel is fake news. All the hype about that storm and we got maybe 2 inches! The critters moved a little while it was warm.

Picked up my first mink of the season.

I love my Montana Specials! Caught this joker in a hay set with Lenons fox lure and a piece of deer fat.

Running a snare line I came to my turning point and was looking for a snare. I knew it was there but I wasnt seeing it. Got a little closer and found it smile

Good check! The one in the snare looks wolf like from the picture.
I was really hoping we would get 10 inches like it forecast. We got four inches and a couple skiffs since then. Still rough going but nothing like it was.

JR good to hear! Look forward to hearing about your adventures this year! Hope you have good weather and get alot of gear out!

bfisch, I wish that was a wolf smile That pic of the yote in the trap, I had one come through there last year. They are a rarity on my line. Yeah we both know the snow will eventually come, I hope it is just gradually and not one big dump smile

Have gotten over 50" here, already. Now drizzly, freezing rain. Dropping into single digits this weekend. I will be chipping and digging out the sets I just put in, 3 days ago.
