I see where you are coming from and I appreciate the benefit of the doubt. I just think that maybe if some things would have been different for this kid he wouldn't have resorted to doing what he did.

It will be interesting to see if the gun was accessible to the kid. Like SJA was saying, that could be a different charge entirely

Agreed. I'm not perfect. But my guns are locked up in a safe.

No. It's common sense. Kids should not have free reign over the gun safe.

Maybe I'm crazy for thinking this way

If your kids feel the need to play with guns I think you are wise to keep them locked up. I think more parents should have children who have no desire to play with guns. My daughter doesn't play with my chainsaw or nail gun why would I let her think it's acceptable to play with a gun. I have always had a gun around handy never know when a coyote will cut across the pasture. She doesn't see a gun and think any different of it then my other tools.

Too many schools have become breeding grounds for social engineering, and it’s not a new thing.

They need to get back to basics,

Yup. Different strokes for different folks. My daughter knows to not touch them if I'm not present. Her friends, however, may not know how to treat a gun. For that reason, mine are not accessible.

I guess the best we can do is support the community and wait for ALL the facts to come together.

Also doesn't help that kids that age are suffering through a toxic mix of hormonal changes and social adjustment. Lots of drama and violence plays out in those schools daily. When it boils over......this is what you get.

I'm surprised social media hasn't been brought up yet (or I missed it), a MAJOR factor in what kids "choose" to do these days!

Fixed it for ya grin

Fixed it for both of you. Although I do agree with you Crager. Gun free zones are rarely actually safe places.

There's always access if someone wants it bad enough.

Yup......and to make matters worse for me....my parents tried to get the small country school we went to closed down.....failed, and after that we were outcasts.....so got picked on a lot, which tends to be the nature of jr. high school kids anyway. Find somebody below you in the pecking order and peck on em. Boys and girls trying to pair off and getting into fights over it. Or car wrecks over it. Girls meaner than boys.

And it was not uncommon for me to take guns to school.....my cousin and I often went goose hunting before school and would usually make it by 2nd period. Dead geese and shotgun in the car trunk. But never once occurred to me to pull it out and use it on anyone.

Life ain't fair and the world is mean...

Doesn't mean you need to commit murder

I checked traps every day before school and had my single shot marlin 22 in my tool box. We had a shooting team and when that was going on I would have my shotgun as well. School resource officer knew about it and knew they would never leave our trucks. That's been a few years ago, but not that many. Crazy to see how things have changed in such a short amount of time. That would never be allowed today and I would have been kicked out of school for sure

Gotta live up to the nickname...

New York if you will go back and read James's post I think you will see that it's not written the way you read it. This is sad

No matter where you go there you are.

You are, imo. I had my own guns in a gun rack over my bed from the time I was 9 years old on. Kids need to be taught, but once they are, there should be no need whatsoever to lock up guns.

So wait... it was okay for you to have access to guns when you were a kid just a few years ago, but now it's not for other kids?
