Well line check no 5 and still havent caught any fur. Im almost done with my DIY trappin basket though.

Surplus molle straps with some tublar webbing bolted to a kitchen sized garbage can. Pvc couplers keep stakes , axe, and setters organized and not banging around. Keep smaller atuff in a fanny pack. Drain holes in the bottom. Going to add some foam to the bottom possibly to keep it from cracking in cold weather when you toss in a trap.

If I were to start over I would wrap the tubar webbing around the can and make a harness around the bottom like the fiberglass ones. When this one breaks from weight thats what Ill do. All the store bought ones seem disproportional and the straps suck, plus overpriced for what they are. You can also add the molle kidney belt to this if youre beaver trapping and would have more weight in traps/fur.

Can was $10 and the straps can be had for $60 plus $5 in couplers and hardware and the webbing I had laying around. So I came out cheaper than a fiberglass pack, and like it far better. Havent had more than 30lbs in it yet but im not worried about comfort since I used the same system on my hang on treestands and have had 50lbs on that.

Let me know your guys thoughts or ideas for improvement or what youve made.

My wife bought me one of those fiber tuff baskets and I do like it. However, its heavy!! I like how you used the pvc couplers to keep your stuff in one spot. Great idea, I think I will do that with mine. I think you got a good basket for all the more money you have in it. Use it and you will figure out what you like and dont like and can make changes! My first year I used the same idea only a Lowes 5-gallon bucket! It's what i could afford at the time!

When I was 12 I made an almost identical pack basket to yours minus the tool holders except it was a dull white color so I painted it with brown spray paint. I bolted on a canvas lure pouch on the back. Served me well It lasted untill I was probably 16ish. Where I bolted the straps on it eventually cracked around an failed. If I was to do it over again I'd put a thin board inside where the shoulder strap bolts go through an bolt it to board to help spread the weight out so it doesn't crack the plastic because if you got alot of trap/stakes inside all the pressure is on the top bolts that hold your straps.

Perhaps bigger washers to displace stress on the plastic.

My concern is how the plastic basket will endure cold weather without cracking or shattering.

Same here, thats why I may cushion the bottom of the can and the next one I will run the webbing around the basket to spread out the weight. Extreme cold could certainly still be an issue though.

Important. If on ice or slippery snow don’t fall backward. Been there!

I’d recommend putting that can in an actual pack or it will tear apart in no time. I’ve been there over the years. A large ALICE pack with that can in it is the ticket!

i have a basket i fitted with a small trash in an ALICE pack. Its awesome

Definitely looked at the Alice Packs. That might be the next iteration as well.

This is what I use , when I have to go in on foot. Mainly, I use my 4 wheeler, boat or truck.

That’s the ticket right there. Exactly my setup. I did cut the top of the trash can off so that the draw string holds the basket in. Excellent and comfy.

Here's my first trapping basket, still take it out for a walk from time to time.


I now use 6 gal. buckets.

Same setups I use. If I'm walking in I use the pack, Alice pack frame with can lashed directly to frame (no pack) and a carpenters apron riveted on for external pickets. Otherwise, it's the bucket with tool pockets.

I made one just like it only thing ive added to it later on is I drilled holes in the bottom for water to drain out after it got caught in a few rainstorms in the back of the truck.
