Been trapping a small acre to acre and half farm pond for muskrats. The other morning when i got there to check traps , there were 3 otters swimming/ playing in the pond . The next day I found what looked to be an otter bank den with several holes about 10' up the bank. I never found any toilets or fresh slides.

I set the entrance of the bank den and most of the holes up top, along with a few baited sets around the pond. It's been four days and no otters. The closest body of water besides the drainage ditch system is a river about 5 miles away. When I trap the river the otters usually come through every 10 to 14 days, is it possible they only come to this pond once every few weeks ? The day I saw them was the 12 th day in a row I had been there and it was i them. saw time I saw them. . Any tips, advice, or suggestions ? -Thanks

Most likely, otter are travelers, and will travel quite long distances overland at times, but I would suspect they come up the drainage ditches.

Yes, it is quite possible they visit the pond while on their river run. Set the drainage ditch and have patience.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

I trap this big pond. I catch the otters out. Week later more shows up. The pond is a long way's too the river. Does have a small creek nearby. I catch more at the crossover than the toilet. I set 4 traps in the crossover one night. I had 3 otters and missed one in the 4 th set. Reset them next night i caught 4th otter in snare i missed it in. I was using 3 snares and a belisle 220.

I've trapped the same pond since we've been able to keep them. Have always caught them on the same trail until this year. First year I set it up I seen them on Thanksgiving day. Didn't catch one til the following week. If they were there they will return. Just wait them out. Last I checked we were no where near our quota.
