Would floor dry work or is that a no no.

What is floor dry made of? I have so much used sawdust I've never bought floor dry, but I thought it was like clay cat litter?

It is Keith. It works great on concrete floors for soaking up oil, water, or whatever. It may stain the hides though. Just wondering if anybody had tryed it.

The clay will wet up from the moisture in the skins and make them dirty and nasty.

Where are you getting your dust from Keith? I need to get some coming my way. What brand tanning oil are you using?

I get dust and bagged goods by the pallet, oils and other liquids by the drum. Taxidermy suppliers are about the only place to buy small quantities of anything. I'm not on here to sell, but I can set you up with whatever you need, and instructions if you want.

Our most used oil is a problem right now, finally got an answer yesterday, they will give us an ETA sometime in January, not necessarily have it in January, just have an idea of when we might expect it, so we are currently on plan B!

Keith - how many pelts do you tan in a year? Do you just do large orders or do you also do smaller/custom lots?

We figure everything by weight. Being so shorthanded now it's tough going, I need several fulltime employees if anyone is looking, but roughly 40,000 lb. a year. We do small orders, but other than fur and domestic skins, cow, sheep, goat etc. we stick to pretty much wholesale. Our main customer base is taxidermists, so we try not to compete for their work.

Trappers aren't going to pay the extra price to send fur through a taxidermist, and most taxidermists won't touch a raw cow hide, so we're not really infringing there.
