Getting back into trapping after a couple year hiatus by mentoring my girlfriends younger brother.

Used to make weasel boxes previously with good success, now in Wisconsin you can leave weasel boxes out without checking for 4 days IF the hole is 1 3/8 inch. Seems small to me, maybe I am misremembering how large of a hole I cut into my old boxes I no longer have. Anyone used that size hole or smaller on a weasel box? work okay? What are other people using for hole size on their boxes?

Thanks for the help!

A weasel would have no problem getting through a hole that size.

Heck, some marten may make it through a hole that size. I would have to get a tape measure and check, but I think most of the ones I made had 1 1/2" holes (I'm sure whatever hole saw was handy, roughly that size) and I've caught marten in them. You'd think they wouldn't fit, but if you can squeeze the skull through, they have no problem fitting if they want through.

Don't know what part of WI the OP is from but he probably dosen't have to worry about catching any martens.

The holes in my boxes are 1 3/4 to 2". I've drilled a 1 3/8 hole looking to go for the extended check, but they always seem small so I haven't tried.
I'm going to cut 1 3/8 holes in 4" x 4" pieces of 1/4 flooring underlayment and temperairly fasten them on and see if they work in the coming weeks if time allows. I'll share my findings if I can make it happen.
