Well, I caught another one a few days ago, but am having trouble posting pics from my android. Another female, (4 of 4, have been females for me). Caught it in a marten box with a Belisle 120, beaver meat, and Gusto. They sure are a neat animal.

That stop on my line has a heavy canopy of hemlock but 20 yards away, at the fringe, it's about 3' deep, with a couple inches of ice crust on top.

What a neat catch. I am curious why you keep catching females? I wish I knew. Of the 4, one was in a horizontal pole box, about 5' off the ground, one was in a ground box, (both Belisle 120's). 2 were in wolverine cubbies, with foot holds.

Great question. The first, in a ground box, was about 20 miles, and 3 large river systems away from the other 3, which were all with-in about one mile from each other. Those 3 where taken over the course of 4 years.

Likely juveniles. We did a study here on incidental fisher catches in marten boxes.Over several seasons the ratio district wide was 9 to 1 juveniles of either sex to adults of either sex. We submitted the heads and the fur tech and a couple volunteers from the fur council boiled and extracted teeth, documented and sent the teeth for aging..

All of the fisher taken in our area are incidental. They climbed, got whacked, and hung from marten sets, or tromping on or through traps in wolverine cubbies. It is highly doubtful anyone here is setting specific to fisher. They weren’t even around until thirty years ago, that anyone knew of. I have caught one smallish female and one pretty good sized male in the same set on two concurrent seasons. The large male. Caught in the range hood vent set at the cabin.

Well, two of the four were taken in wolverine cubbies, with footholds. I donated three carcasses, (last one pending), for study. The second one, (wolverine foothold take), had uterine blastcysts, indicating previous implantation. I agree that at least the others were probably dispersing juveniles, and this area has not previously had fisher, or fisher sign, for the prior 30-plus years that I, or others have trapped it.

I caught a female a couple years ago that probably came down the Stikine, although it wasn't caught in that drainage. I wonder if they will have a negative effect on the marten population?

Well, I'm no expert by any stretch, but being curious by nature, I have done some research on that very subject. The two are actually very different "specialists", and my take-away is that one doesn't out-compete the other. Rather, habitat is the deciding factor, as to which thrives, and which merely survives. Ultimately, I think most of southeast Alaska mainland could support pockets of fisher, I don't see them usurping prime marten habitat. Boco could probably provide insight, and would also love input from Gulo, if White can rattle his cage.
