I'm sure some of yous are tired of this...I've been trying to remove the cartilage of my yotes on the carcass. I've read the archives about it, and watched numerous vids, just wondering if it's easier on or off the carcass?

I cut it out last thing when putting fur on the boards.

I checked it out, looks way easier than what I've been doing, thanks!

Way easier for me off carcass. I have a video published where I do a fox’s ears and coyote’s are exactly the same of course and takes not much more than a minute to do an ear. In case you haven’t seen it-

I do it after skinning and before fleshing, i like to have hide on fleshing beam so the hide dont move when i work around the cartilage, takes me way more then a minute but i get it done.

Great video Seldem.

Coon creek video is good to.

What takes me the longest when removing ear cartilage is working the ear from cartilage up to the point where the video's starts.

Off carcass, if you have cut high enough then a spoon and pliers takes it off in a quick hurry. Insert spoon between outer ear surface and cartilage a bit then grab with pliers and pull it off. You will know if you haven't cut high enough because you will get a lot of ear. Not a big deal besides appearance.

Wish I had more time to trap....

No need to mangle the ears by removing the cartilage with half the ear atttached.
it just needs to be separated from the back of the ear to dry.
i do it after the skin is off the carcass, just run my thumb up the back of each ear betweent the cartilage and the back ear skin.
Trim the meat off the butt,or cut the butt off with a scissors.

I have never removed the cartilage and have never had any problems leaving It attached to the ear.
Get that hide off the board as soon as the hide Is dry enough to hold It's shape. Then open up the head area with some wedges so you get some air movement and you won't have any problems. Or like NAFA told me just cut off the whole ear. Doesn't look good but you shouldn't be down graded for It.

Since canines get sold completely on appearance, pinning them forward with cartlidge removed makes them look slick. Imo

While skinning, I skin down as far as you can on the ears. then I stick a long Phillips head screwdriver behind the ear and head and give it a quick hard pull. that allows me to get my finger behind the ear. I then put the knife above my finger and make a quick cut towards me. That separates the skin from cartilage. From there the outside section (left or right of the center of the heard) of the ear I shove my finger between the skin and cartilage and separate it. A little cut on the inside section of the ear and off it comes. sometimes on a fox when I can pull with the screwdriver and the entire ear comes off with no cartilage. But that only happens a few times.
