So we have a week or so between hunts and I decided to knock the rust off and make a few sets…only 3…on a little stretch of road that’s always produced.
So after deer hunting yesterday morning I made my sets. Two flats and a dirt hole. Well, I was sitting in the stand yesterday evening and remembered I had ordered the Killer Squeaks or whatever they are and one on my flat sets was almost under an over hanging pine limb. I figured I could just duct tape it with the actual speaker part angled down. So leaving late yesterday evening I did just that, using camo duct tape.
Well, seeing how it was just a flat set with some Cavins cat lure, I’m gonna credit the squeaker with the catch.
What’s funny is I drove through on my way hunting this morning and saw the cat then text the manager to text me back when he got up. I figured his son would want to see a caught cat. The manager text me and said he’d love to take care of it for me. He dispatched the cat, then spent the next several minutes trying to figure out where that Dang squeaking sound was coming from, lol. He said it’s just loud enough to be noticeable, but then shuts off so he thought he was hearing things, then it started back and he’d try and zero in on it. Guessing the critters do the same.
I reset in the same spot, repunched the hole and added the same lure. Just left the squeaker squeaking and see what else happens.

If you look at the orange ribbon in the second pic, you can see the squeaker taped to the limb.
On top of the bobkitty, I ended up taking a young rank Boar from the stand. That joker stunk from 10ft away!

Awesome! Beautiful cat. I was going to order a few of those electronic squeakers but first checked with DNR here in SC for clarification. In South Carolina, they are legal only for coyotes. IE if you catch anything other than coyote in a trap where one is used, has to be released. So, I didn’t order.

I’ve looked through our trapping regulations and it says nothing about not being able to use them.

Starting to become a believer. Same set as yesterday, just reset and re-lured.

WannaBe,
I think you will be legally OK using these for trapping. Georgia law does state that use of an electronically recorded or amplied sound cannot be used to hunt any game animal. Bobcats , fox, coons, and possums are listed as game animals and furbearers in Ga.

So, there is a dark grey area concerning their use in trapping. If you were using those to hunt bobcats (or any game animal) and you were there with the device, such as setting up with an electronic caller like a Foxpro unit, etc...then the law is clear....and that's currently illegal.

You may get a different opinion if you ask around, but trapping is somewhat unique. Trapping allows the use of baits when the law specifically states only deer and feral hogs can be baited for hunting.

See that dark grey area now???

BTW,
I have 6 of the same type devices (that GritGuy on here makes). Haven't used them in a couple years but I have no issues with using them for trapping only.

Yes sir I’ve read that and understand it. But is trapping considered hunting? Nothing specific in the “actual trapping regulations” that I could find. Guess that’s the grey area, and if it’s illegal I’ll quit, but until then I’ll keep using them.

Just read your last paragraph. I’m the type of person that will watch them from the deer stand because I’d rather try and trap them, lol.
Coyotes and hogs on the other hand will be shot with whatever is within reach, lol.

My pro opinion is you're good to go for trapping.

Just to clarify: I don’t think they should be illegal and wish I could use them. Great pics! Thanks for sharing.

Well now this is just getting crazy. We started getting rain yesterday afternoon, through the night, and all morning. I went to check traps after a pitiful duck hunt and what was waiting on me?
Bobkitty #3 on the same set as the previous two days. I was worried the squeaker was ruined, but taping it where the sound is angled downward kept the rain out and it’s still going strong.
First cat was a female, yesterdays was a tom, and this was a young female.
Definitely a believer now.
Throwing in a pic of why 75% of my sets are set the Zagger way. Sets are fully functional and if no catch, just drive on by. Dirt holes just don’t work with the amount of rain we got.

I was able to use the same screen cover after the first catch, but had to replace it after the second catch. I was able to reuse that second screen after this catch as well.

Are you using steel or aluminum screen?

Steel screen I got from NO BS Lures. Ordered a whole heap of it a year or so ago. With cats I can generally get a couple of uses. With K9’s you can hang it up, lol. They seem to use it as a chew toy after caught.

I may be doing it all wrong, but the trap is basically level with the deck. During heavy persistent rain the hole underneath might fill up with water but the trap still works. With a dirt covering I’ve had it pool up dirt and debris over the entire trap when buried the normal way below the deck. If we have a forecasted period of good weather I might put in a few more dirt holes or traditional way of bedding. All I’m wanting right now is weather that reminds me that it’s actually Winter!!
