I hit my raccoon goal early this year, (luckily after a disappointing season the year prior) now I'm gonna try a new adventure. Weasels. Few and far between here, but I want to give it a shot. Any tips, advice?

Make some boxes with about a 1 1/2" hole drilled in them. Set a #1 inside and throw a chunk of beaver meat in the back. Use a loud, skunky lure like Gusto... and be sure to wire the trap down if you have coons. Those #1s will work like a bodygrip on weasel and they aren't going anywhere, but coons will reach through that hole or flip the top off the box to try and grab the bait, and if you don't have the trap wired down, well. . . Marten will also manage to fit through a 1/1/2" hole and you will catch them on occasion. Not sure if you have any marten, though.

Rock piles brush piles and old run down buildings are good locations. Bloody beef liver makes a good bait.

I get them around cattails and willow brush areas, pretty much all short tails here in my part of southern mn. Junk piles, brush piles and overgrown farm groves could be places to try too. I just use the yellow pan Victor rat traps in a wooden box.

I know a trapper that used to use a 4-wheeler where he could on frozen marshes. He set boxes along the edges of cattails and did very well. His best year was near 100. He also sets up areas where he has to walk the lines but it is almost always in cattail marshes and cattail sloughs. I know I see a lot of mice when I am rat trapping in the marshes through the ice.

Other than around the place, love em as they are great mousers, brush piles out in the woods. Big wooden rat trap ( those that look like mouse traps ) nailed to a tree 12-16 inches up. Bait arm down with a chunk of meat on it. Easy.

Culverts joining set a side fields or thick brush and cattails. Set right in culverts with boxes. Flag them if you get drifting snow as they will be gone till spring.
