well we had covid here , so today is the first day my son can go back to work he has been working for a local auto shop for about a month they like him , he likes it there all seemed well
he goes in and they said , ahhh yeah we needed to talk to you , our insurance company called us and says we can't keep you 18 is too young to work on cars
never mind he has been doing a good job for a month and was working out well , his other co-worker left just before Christmas to take a job at a different shop where they could pay more
so the owner is down to himself now.
what the hey , since when is 18 too young to have a job where do they expect to get decent workers if they have to turn down capable young men who are doing good work
I know I was too young when I started working in a shop I was about 3 months short of turning 18 and I am sure the manager made a sloppy enough looking 8 into a 3 so that I was 5 months older.
but he waited till he was 18 and then some
at a time when people employers are screaming they need people it seems like all sorts of stupid
luckily he took my advice and didn't go into hock with the tool truck but he was excited to go back with a pile of new tools he had gotten for Christmas and ordered while he was off with covid this last week. unfortunately he is tool rich and money poor at the moment
well the boy is looking for a job again
ok rant over

Insurance companies rule, unfortunately!

Doesn't sound legal to me. Can you legally get canned because of your age? Sounds fishy. At least the job market is wide open for a young man but that stinks

Maybe the employer just wanted to fire little Johnny and made something up? We will never know.

At least the job market is wide open for a young man but that stinks technical laid off but when your part time there is no unemployment so whatever I told him when we go to pick up his tool box with the trailer , ask for a letter of reference so that you can show what you were doing and that you were a casualty of insurance and not something else. a good word from a happy employer even if they had to let you go because of the insurance man is better than nothing. I am sure it puts him in a bind down to zero mechanics besides himself with 6 bays and it wasn't like they had many slow days.

I suspect it's related to the type of work - auto repair. The scope of working on automobiles necessitates test drives. Likely the insurance company has written acceptance guidelines which restrict them from providing auto (garage) liability insurance where they know young drivers will be conducting test drives. I doubt it has anything to do with the young man's skill or ability as a mechanic or his quality as a worker. And, sometimes it is the insurance company's insurance company (the reinsurer) that dictates such underwriting restrictions. Sometimes you just can't "fight city hall" no matter how illogical the reasoning.
It most definitely is age discrimination. But insurance underwriting is purely and entirely discrimination based on all sorts of factors - age just being one of them. There's nothing wrong or illegal about discrimination unless it is unfair or illegal discrimination. Due to age being a quantifiable and known increase in risk, age discrimination in insurance is neither unfair or illegal.
Back when I sold a lot of garage liability insurance, we sometimes worked around this problem by the auto repair facility having a written policy that precludes mechanics under the age of 25 (or mechanics with a DUI history) from test driving customer cars or operating tow trucks if they had them. That means another mechanic would need to do the test drive and report his findings to the other mechanic doing the work. But not every insurance company would accept that work-around.

I am sure this is probably exactly what it is , he has to be able to pull cars in and out at a minimum and get them on the rack. he is going to try some other shops , a good friend of his worked for a shop next town over at 17 and left recently to go to diesel mechanics school in October, he is going to try them tomorrow and see if they need help. his mother wouldn't mind the vacation day he would buy her if he came to work at the plant she works at they are looking for farm implement assemblers , she is an administrative assistant in the parts office.

"Pizza Hut restaurants require delivery drivers reach the age of 18 prior to employment. Job seekers may find other employment requirements for pizza delivery jobs, such as a clean driving record, good sense of direction, clean-cut dress code, and some basic mental math skills. Most importantly, a delivery driver with Pizza Hut must already have a friendly and courteous attitude toward customers and coworkers."

Youd think they'd of known that fact before even posting the position. Or the insurance agent they used is garbage.

Sacked groceries for a time in high school. Part of the job included cleanup in the back... I could break down boxes and load them in the crusher/baler but I couldn't push the button to operate the ram... But on my 18th birthday I was magically imbued with all the responsibility and maturity required to push said button.
