-15 here gave the chickens another bag of wood chips today to keep their feet warmerI put electrolytes in their waters then topped off the feeders also tossed cracked corn out for the other birds and the wife did the same where she has feeders out. She puts feed out for the pheasants/ rabbits that hang around also it’s a regular zoo at times.
Upper part of the coop is +40 but the floor can be freezing, I shut them in if the winds bad for them or if it gets subzero at night.

I like feeding birds in the winter also. On the ranches, pheasants come to the shelterbelts around the ranch buildings for protection and always manage to pick up some feed the cattle left behind.....
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

I lived on a place years ago when the birds were thick if things got crazy cold I’d go to the grain scale and fill the back of my truck with cracked corn then get several bags of cheap birdseed for grit. I’d see where they were feeding in the wind swept areas along the creeks and scoop shovel it into those areas. Lucky our weather comes and goes so the bad weather seldom stays around very long. -15 today looks like 35-40 above tomorrow.

I'm not the only one who likes to give poultry electrolytes. Way to go, Jerry. The chicks growing up get them and if they are restricted to the coop because of the weather they get them along with any stressful weather issues in the summer.

It was 29 below here this morning and the water in the coupe has not froze this winter. The water is in a rubber feed tub and sits on the floor no heat lamp or light. But my wife said when I built the coupe, it was the best coupe in ND. 2x6 walls insulated with fiber glass and 9" in the ceiling. When you know that winter will show up you may as well be ready.

^^^^^Smart man! Insulation is cheap.. It is much easier to insulate when you build than fight froze water, and chickens.

I have always said that a Porsche is a proper chick magnet .
Our girls don't like snow on their feet. So we made trails for them yesterday so they could make their way back into the coop and run. Two of the neighbors chickens stayed for a sleep over as they did to make it back home. They are the clever ones as he has no coop and they roost in a tree next to his house whereas ours are in a heated coop with plenty of food and water and a layer of straw in the run. and extra thick wood chips in the coop.
