Good morning! I am making soft soap for tanning following the instructions in "the ultimate guide to tanning and skinning" by Monte Burch.i am using rendered deer tallow (back fat and fat from the abdominal cavity) to make the soap. I am making the lye from woodshed. I have tried loading pics but each time I try I get a message my file is too big.

Ok...so it worked out. The soap ended up crumbly and dissolved nicely in H2O. I used it on 3 squirrels and 1 hair off deer skin. They are drying right now so we will see.

I just want to say that I have used soaps for substitutes for braintanning process but have never tried making my own soaps. I am very interested in hearing how the process worked for you. Thanks for sharing.

The tallow KOH soap worked but I think the new soap I am working on will work better. Snagged my first coon and it was easier to flesh than I thought it would be. I saved the fat from the fleshing and cut fat off the carcass. It seems like it will make a better soft soap than the deer tallow.
