Try to find a file that has a “safe” edge, that is, no teeth on the outside edge. That makes it easy to work the underside of the notch without cutting into the side at the same time. It’s very easy to do and only takes a few passes with the file once you get a groove started.

I buy stainless steel rod dogs now. They don't wear out or bend In the past I would clamp vice grips 1/8" from the end of the dog and file my nitelatch in.
So It's your stand that I can't state my opinion on trap modification.
I'm not trying to talk someone out of modifying their traps. I'm just stating my opinion and what works for me. And that's what this forum Is all about.

Sucked in again. When you pull the pan down you remove slop / play in the trigger system. If you short notch you do not. The drill, new bigger bolt, washers, blah blah, there is still slop.
If someone wants to grind the notch away, have at it, not for me. If someone does not care about consistent trigger, cool.
I have read post here that go both ways on the night latch issue. I personally always use night latch and here is why. When I adjust my traps at the beginning of the season I adjust pan level to the night latch. I push on the dog to take any creep out and set pan from there. When my trap is tuned in this manner it makes things on the line faster for me. I set the trap to night latch, push out creep and bed the trap. I could almost do this blindfolded. It is just a repetition practice for me as is the way everyone sets. There isn't a right or wrong, just what works for you. I am all for night latch. Good day all... Tight chains.
