Hey fellas,

I picked up a 2005 skandic 550f wt for a steal with only 238 miles and was going to do away with the oil system like I have on my tundra but had a couple questions for you boys up north. First, should I even remove the oiler? Are they notorious for loosening up like on the tundras? I guess the reason I wanted to go to pre mix is the age of the machine and it sitting for years. I doubt sitting hurt the plastic gears of the oil pump but it’s in the back of my mind. Second question is there are two wires that attach to the outlet on the bottom of the oil tank fitting and don’t know what they are for. Tired following the lines but they go into a harness and get lost. They look like ground wires that don’t have anything to do with the oil system. Thanks for any help you guys might have!

Just my opinion but you can never go wrong eliminating everything having to do with the oiler. On the two wires I suspect they may have something to do with the electronic part of the injection system or a sensor for a low oil warning. Others will have a much more informed suggestion.

Can't agree more White, less moving parts the better! I bet you're right on the low oil light, not used to fancy machine with dummy lights. If it is part of electronic oil injection shouldn't do no harm unplugging then right? Here's a picture of the wires.

I don't see where it would harm anything by disconnecting the wires......................unless it has some sort of lock out mechanism designed into the low oil warning. I am not familiar with that machine.

Those two wires are your low oil level sensor. The oil injection seems to be reliable on those sleds but some still prefer to premix and that hurts nothing.

You will be money ahead if you give that machine away. The 550's are gas guzzling machines... but I don't know of anyone that had a oiler issue with them. Pack gas if you are going to run that....

Thanks for all the info guys! Won't be running it as much as you guys do to the north and for the price it will make up for some fuel! Get it torn off tonight

I have had a bunch of machines and after running the new computer machines I would have much rather paid the extra gas bill for the peace of mind with the several 550’s I have owned. The used ones that come up for sale here go the first day listed! So I am not alone in my opinion!

Only oiler problem I ever had was on the Tundra when they first came out.

I love the smell of burning spruce---I love the sound of a spring time goose---I love the feel of 40 below---from my trapline I will never go!

Only remove the oiler to pull the plastic shaft and gear, pull them both out. Put the oiler back on tight. Now run 50:1 2 stroke oil. If you have to re-jet, now is the time to do it. Depends on a lot of conditions, temp, pressure, altitude, etc. If you leave the wires hooked up, pull one off the back of the red light on the dash, so it doesn't light up. You can keep oil in the stock oil tank, as a just in case someone needs oil. Just put a pet-(This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) on it and wire it closed until you need some extra oil on the trail or your friend runs out, or if it's really cold like -40 below zero or colder. I think someone put notes on this in the archives that I wrote up a few years ago.

Temperature both cold and hot will work over that little plastic gear. You should be scared of it. Pull it and go pre-mix, rejet it and you can go from -40 below zero to +40 above at Sea Level.

Only takes a missing tooth on the gear, then you start it and it's cold and breaks another, then it's been sitting, so it breaks another. Now it's going round and round, no oil, then plenty, then none, then plenty. You get the idea. Pretty soon enough of the teeth break off and not enough oil, it goes boom. You pull the cord and there is no resistance. There is a stripe down the front side of your piston. Your done. Walk home and rebuild the motor yourself for $600. It's going to be $1400-$2000 or more at the shop. Holler if questions.

My Super Wide will pull your broken down 4 stroke, up a hill backwards, with you on it!

I've never really understood why everyone went to all the bother of removing all the oil system. I mean if I had to remove them to get at something else I might not put them back, but otherwise they aren't hurting anything. On the Tundras I switched to running premix, I just left the oil system there. Also tends to make resale better when all the parts are there.
Just make sure that when you go to sell it you either make sure the oil system works, or warn the buyer that you didn't use it.

Good reliable machine, I've ran a couple of them quite a bit, and never knew of any of them to have an issue with the oiler, but. . . pack at least a 5 gallon can of gas with you, and more if you have to actually go far or conditions are bad, like raining in the snow.

Thanks for the info bearcat. Looking back I don't know why I removed my tundra oiler instead of pulling the gears and putting it back on. Never was accused of being that bright!
