What is it?

It's made of a coarse stone. It's 3 inches in diameter. The hole is off center. There is a deep groove worn around the entire outside edge. It came with a collection of about 50 Native American, stone tools I bought at auction, 30 plus of which are celts or pieces of celts.

I am sure you could use it to castrate a hog, but it reminds me of a stone, pulley wheel.

Very crude and early mill stone. Water powered, would be my guess

I think it's a grain grinding wheel. The 1st pic is the grinding surface, and the other pics are of the top.
Something like this
[Linked Image]
Inside the hole is worn by stone on stone just like the bottom.
The grove around the outside is to move it back and forth with raw hide or sapling rope.
No hole for a handle like in the pic.
The offset hole is odd though. Could have been a, that one tribe made them this way kind of thing.

Just a guess

The small diameter is throwing me off on a grinding stone. Part of what makes a grinding stone work is it’s heft and weight. Be a long time grinding enough food to make a meal with that. However, I don’t have a better idea. The offset hole is not offset but rather one side saw more grinding. Which can be explained with the rope theory. A back and forth sawing motion would wear one side out quicker if not rotating the working side regular. Anyway, most interesting thing I’ve seen in awhile. Actually dreamed about it last night…it was used to help rotate the lantern in a lighthouse lol.

In better days, it may have looked more like this:
Primitive grindstone
Just as a wild guess, the offset hole in my link may have been for a handle. The grooved circumference on yours may have been a rope drive. Maybe it operated as a cam. within an abrasive cylinder. All theory; sorry, no knowledge.
