Ever heard of the concept of "speculation?" From what I understand, buyers and buyers already have piles and piles of speculation that they can't get rid of. So you're going to go out and buy more speculation? Fair question isn't it Swamp?

It's not surprising that the fur market gets affected during COVID.....almost like every other market except for US firearms industry. I agree 100% that we need to stop giving the fur away, people who are saying there is no demand, there will always be demand. As long as there is people who don't want people to make fur garments, coats, pouches, etc, there will always be a market. If I understand the early gentlemen, he was simply saying we should band together on the prices, which I think is halfway reasonable. The problem comes in when folks start to come by hard times and those coons that could get 4 each start to mean something when the kids are hungry and the fridge is empty.
Sell your fur, don't sell your fur this year, the fur market will come back, just like every other market will end up rebounding. The buyers would and will pay high prices for the furs, it's not like they are buying low, selling low, they are getting top dollar for the same fur we sell to them for pennies. Personally the silver lining in all of it is the forcing function for us to find new markets for our furs, and to get creative, like the craft industry.

Kind of amazing how much crap our little state auction caused. Lol. Do the other state auctions get this much negative feedback? If you only knew. Put on a multi-state big event auction in a down market!!

There is NOT a demand!! Most of us remember when there was a demand. The tiny dab of coon that are being harvested and actually entering the fur market is such a tiny amount compared to when there was “demand”. 10 years ago this season I knew of 10,000 coon caught in the county that I live. That’s just the guys that I knew. Certainly there were more. I guarantee that there won’t be 200 coon enter the fur market from the same county. When many buyers/dealers advertise that they don’t want coon, there’s no demand. I’m normally an optimist, but it’s getting harder and harder to be optimistic about the wild fur market. No demand? So Trevor Barnes is driving from Michigan to your place in Northern Missouri in early March to have some beans and shoot the sh$$? He sure as heck ain’t coming just to buy Missouri coon! Lol

Im easy to confuse sometimes, so if buyer & buyers have piles & piles of fur they cant get rid of...then where is that demand you speak of??? Fair question isnt it kinley31?

For those of you talking "Hold the line, don't sell cheap" Tell the fur buyer what you want, and watch him laugh. The reason the price is so low and grade is so tight is because there is no demand. When big buyers says they don't want coon it means there is no demand. Demand will not go up raising the price, even if you could. When the day comes that you click on Groenewold's website, and they are running ZERO routes, in ZERO states and only buying at their Illinois facility, then I'll believe there's no demand. That is exactly how Growenwold started the season - not running any routes. Now there is so much demand they are running through once.

So you're going to go out and buy more speculation? Fair question isn't it Swamp? If it gets your average down, yes. If you have a pile of coon you can't sell at a profit, should you sell them at a loss, or buy more and get the price down per head and sell them all at a small profit? Someone will buy anything if it is cheap enough. With out demand, they will bock when the price goes up.

Kind of amazing how much crap our little state auction caused. Lol. Do the other state auctions get this much negative feedback? It's not specifically about the Iowa auction Possum. Just happened to be the thread in which I threw some ideas out to think about and chew on. As you can see, I'm from Iowa, and I appreciate all the hard work and efforts our association does for us. Many of us have done this for a long time, and it's hard to change our way of thinking and possibly doing business a different way. It's what we've been taught, fed, and led to believe. I'm 53, and I go to trapping conventions and I'm one of younger guys there. Sure there's some younger guys, but just a handful. Everyone knows how much work is involved with trapping, and it takes a dedicated work ethic to do it. The younger generation gets bashed all the time because they have no work ethic. Well I'm going to defend them...they are smarter than us. They realize and understand that it's not worth doing for the money that they're going to get in return; absolutely zero incentive. And when we go away (older generation of trappers), trapping will go away, unless the younger generation is taken care of, and compensated for their efforts. So some say there is no demand, but buyers are buying their out-of-state licenses, running routes, spending money on gas/diesel, and employing people. Just think about it guys, that's all I'm asking.
