I had been thinking there was no reason to dry my skins on stretchers even though I have made some. I was thinking I would just flesh and freeze or flesh and pickle. Well, can't have my hides in solution on the back porch when it is in the teens and 20's. So there is a large, wide tub in the bathroom my wife calls a garden tub. Never gets used. I do put my hides and solution in totes, I have just been putting the totes in the garden tub.
My wife has had enough. She says, waking me up at 3:30 this morning, "I have been thinking about this all night. Either they go or I go. The house is full of dead critters. They are everywhere. Your hobby is taking over the house."
She was understanding about letting me take over the spare bedroom for reloading and hunting stuff. She grudgingly accepts using the crock pot for rendering tallow and fat for my soap and candle projects. She has never said anything like this to me before. I believe she is serious. I am going to flesh, salt and dry the hides on stretchers then tan them in the spring when it warms up and I can do this outside. Lesson learned.

Nooo....she puts up with everything else I do. She even skins deer. There is a small out building with a wood stove on the property which came with the "as is" trailer we bought. I imagine the building was once used for processing muskrat and other animals considering that used to be an industry jn south jersey. I just need to keep her happy enough until that building is restored. I have been learning to mill my own lumber with my small chainsaw for this purpose. Getting this project done has taken on a sense of urgency. Not many women out there who are not only pretty and easy to get along with and also skin and butcher deer. I got me a real gem.

Get that building finished! Mine is pretty close to the same, real understanding of everything, but I know where my limits are to not push them!

Yes you do! Better hang on to her!!
My wife helps me load a deer onto a small home made trailer once I get them out of the woods. I do the skinning and butchering and she vacuum seals.
She's a great cook and has never said anything about all the time I spend in the woods and fields or on the lakes fishing, except have a good time. God gave me a good'n!!

Don't put them on a stretcher after salting, just leave them covered in salt a few days then hang them over a board to dry. Keep them off any steel, it will rust and burn the skin or stain the fur, whichever it is touching.

I'm guessing you're a very young couple...if you push the issue, she will certainly cave! Just grow a pair, cuz if not, fore long you'll have kids! Train her now that fur is the most important thing, don't let her call it a hobby! Just my $.02

...get some boards, or wire stretchers and you should be fine...no salt.

Thanks all! Just salt and hang over a board to dry? Or dry and no salt? I feel like I have been making this harder than necessary. Anyway, pretty much done hunting for the year. Fleshed, pickled, degreased, and am now tanning 2 nice road killed coons. I am dehairing 2 small deer skins and have one in the freezer I am going to turn into a rug and I am finished until next winter. I made boards for my squirrel and am going to be making boards for coon and muskrat. I have to mill the lumber from a pine which went down out back so I am going to have to make the stretchers when ever I can. Again, thanks for being here and providing input.
