I didn't have a Rupp mini bike had different one with Brggs straton 5hp. Knew some guys with Rupps and one of my older brothers friends worked at Rupp deal. So I didn't get chance to ride a couple. The one that was my dream bike I believe was called Black Widow.. Never owned a snow mobile. But got more than one ride with that freinds of my brother. Think his machine was called 440 Nitro???

Could be. Our Rupp racer is a 295 Nitro. It works for trails too and in fact is nice in a way because they are light if ya get stuck. Also, much easier to store than today's sleds. Mixing gas is a pain though. If I was going for a trail ride, I might lean towards our 340 Yankee instead. Each is different. The Nitro has front shocks & a slide rear suspension, whereas the Yankee has a bogey wheel rear suspension. My uncle sold a lot of those mini bikes at his shop back in the day.

We had a Rupp snowmobile. It was so fast the only place we rode it was on a golf course. At 100mph the front would lift and it would very lightly teeter from one ski to the other. No idea how fast it would go. Speedometer went to 160mph with space after that.

A friend of mine has won the Adirondack Cup snowmobile race in Booneville NY, twice (the only one to do it) his first time was on a Rupp Nitro...Early 70's... Ron Hall began racing in 1970 at local upstate New York tracks. In 1973, Ron started racing Rupps for the legendary “Team Abold” and later switching to Arctic Cats. He is still the only driver to win the coveted Adirondack Cup twice! Ron took first place in Mod III at the 1975 World Series and was voted 1975 Driver of the Year! Wearing Gold bibs #1, #3, #4, #8, and #22, he still holds the record for most USSA points in one season and still holds the record for 15 straight feature wins in Mod I ! In 1977, while racing in five different classes, Ron took 22 first place, 12 second place 7 third place and 7 fourth place finishes! Ironically, in his first year of racing stock, he broke a spindle, crashing into the wall at Eganville Ontario Canada on February 5th 1977 ending his amazing career and left the sport with over 150 first second and third place trophies in just seven years of racing!

For selling your Rupps you should consider going to the Midwest ride at the ERX grounds in elk river minnesota. It is the largest vintage snowmobile ride and show anywhere. It won’t take you long to determine the value. The show was moved from waconia to elk river a few years ago due to politics and the DNR. There are plenty of videos on the tube if anyone is curious. I don’t do f book but I guess there is a Rupp group there, they will know what your stuff is worth. The ride in is Jan. 28,29

It might have felt like it was going that fast, but you'd be going faster than the professional snowmobile racers of that time...The stock 440 Nitro might do a tic over 80mph in a 1/4 mile, but with the suspensions of those days, it might as well have been triple digits...

Redknot - At what time? How do you know? Were you there? What do you know about my snowmobile? Ha!
Anyway, simply sharing an old fun memory. When I bought it used I was told that it had been modified to race on lakes for top speed. Yes it was fast and fun. I certainly know that slightly faster and the wind lift would have caused a flip. Was the speedometer absolutely accurate? Who knows. But from riding other snowmobiles and motorcycles and flying airplanes I have a good sense of moving right along.
Your photos just jogged my memory. (With 2 brother, we had quite a few “propulsion” units around.) I just remembered that I also had a Rupp mini bike. Mine was larger than the mini bikes but still had the mini bike styling. It was sort of a mint green and looked just like the one in West River Rogue’s first photo. I used it for trapping a bit.

I had one also...at 12 yrs old I was running traplines for 5-6 miles every direction from my house. Did get pneumonia one year.

We posted them to vintagesleds.com the other day. Got several calls already.
