What do you guys use on your cable/chain anchors so you can leave the anchor in the ground but still be able to remove the trap. Leaving the anchor in the ground.

J-hooks. Just open to remove trap but don't reuse them. Use a FRESH j-hook when the trap is reattached.

J hook is probably the cheapest way to go. Do you use a tool or screwdriver or what to open the old one ?

100 j - hooks for $12.95 is pretty cheap with no worries Beav . I’ve had two traps disappear over the years when using quick links, never had that happen with a j-hook .

If someone whats your traps they will get them no matter what you use. I have found some quick links that have had thread problems. They just wouldn't tighten up.

I use J hooks but weld them. When I need to pull I use a bolt cutters. I also use 3/16" quick links when I'm out in the field and need to add a super stake or drag.

I’m not saying they don’t have a place in trapping, I’ve just had too many places in the past that were easily accessible from the road if someone was looking in just right place. Everyone around here has pliers, lol .

Do you put the j hook on the loop in the cable? If you do, aren’t you worried they might work off during a catch?

True that. I had an MB 750 I had to replace the jaws on because they were bent up from somebody trying to pull it with a fourwheeler and chain. six in deep holes dug in the road from them spinning their tires.

Not sure I understand the question. The j hooks are closed shut I don't see how they would get worked off. This is the way I attach traps to cable stakes as well. Be careful to inspect then when pulling though as that extreme pull can open J hooks.

Pulling can open em...but hammering them in firm ground will too. Have had #6 swivel hooks open a little when driving and pulling. It was always the swivel hooks attached to the chain stake. Had to weld em.

3/16" quick links stopped all that extra work.

1/4” quick links here. Easier with cold hands. 10mm wrench always in my bag. Have never had a failure. I have lost at least one catch to a unwelded Jhook. All jhooks welded now. Haven’t had a problem in many years. Plus they fit perfect through a swivel.

Heavy duty split ring is another option .I use them and also have some quick links in my bucket. Most of the trapping suppliers sell both.
