I just started putting up fur this year, I've always sold coyotes in the round previously.
The last time I sold my put up fur, The buyer really beat me up on about 4-5 of them due to lice. $5 a pelt and suggested not wasting time on those type of dogs next time.
I should have asked this question at that time, but I didn't so I'll ask it here....

How can you tell if there is lice or not before a guy wastes time putting up a $5 dog? Two of them looked almost identical to me with good guard hair and one was a $40 coyote and one was $5.
What are the tricks? Just experience??
I realize this might be tough to describe over the internet, but figured ask anyway and see what t-man has to say.

Reddish matted fur in the belly is the first sign-it progresses up the flanks and the guard hair will look broken,and actually in the grotzen a lot of the longer hair will be cut off and or rubbed off.Often the tail will look like a rope.
It is more noticeable on the grotzen but can be seen on the neck also.
The big givaway is the red matted belly fur.
If it is just starting and the belly is red and matted,the rest of the pelt may still be good with a lot of usable fur to a manufacturer.
Fur buyers and graders when they see the belly they downgrade it immediately.
