Hi all !
Today I found a place where a beaver comes out from under the ice to munch on fresh twigs. how would you catch it ?
what traps did you use ?

I'd drop a 280/330 over the hole and call it a day like I do for otter but I'm also pretty lazy as these things go

Looks like a good snare spot too.

By simply "drop a 280/330 over the hole", how do you keep the trap from jumping off the ice and missing the beaver. I'm sure that you do more than just drop the trap on the ice. I was just thinking that maybe ole KOSOI could use a bit more detail about your trap placement technique.

I wanted to ask the old trappers, how to catch it ?

I'm sure someone with more experience than me will chip in. I usually clear some snow around the hole, place a 330 that's got a few inches of travel on the trigger directly over the top and anchor it off to something nearby. Usually the ice here is thick enough that by the time they've committed to popping through it they won't turn around or back off. If I'm expecting weather colder than -5°C, or if I'm the one who cut the hole, I will build a little log cabin shaped square structure over the top of the trap and the hole with dead branches to create an open space and then top it with evergreen boughs and snow to keep the hole from freezing over. I set a few of these each winter in areas where there are beaver moving along river/lake systems but I haven't located the lodge or feed lots and those sets seem to catch beaver and otter pretty evenly in systems where they're both present.
