Patrick, that’s gonna be fun.
Hey, do you still make that lure ? The one from deer gut. I think that’s what it was. Yes

John, About 8 years ago, Rusty Johnson and I ground many gallons of empty deer rumens, several deer livers, hearts, and about 15 gallons of bloodshot deer trimmings...(a friend owned a deer processing business.)
We had a day of bait making that day....with his old grinder. We ground about 300 beaver tails that day too....bogging his grinder with the frozen tails...lol.
We added the SB (several gallons) as we ground it. Also added glycerin ( many gallons) and kept re-grinding until it was a paste consistency. Nothing else was added. Rusty had the SB and glycerin in 55gal drums due to his bait/lure business.
We ended up with 20 or 25 gallons total. This was desinged as a bait with a fresh deer gut smell. I still have 10 gallons that haven't been opened since we put the lids on the buckets back then. It had a perfect deer gut smell and worked very good on coyotes. A skunky lure always complimented it at a set.
My son and I jarred several pints and sold some at a couple conventions a few years back. A few folks got back with me and said it worked very well. They'll dig it up. Some wanted more but I dont have enough to sell like that anymore. Its easy enough to make with any grinder.
Recently, Ive been dipping out of one partial bucket. The odor has changed a little over time as with any concoction that has aged 8 plus years. It still retains the deer gut odor but it has an underlying unique odor...I guess from the aging. But, it still works well. I have some I spiked with skunk essesnce......16oz cup at a time. That version is fantastic.
Several pints of this bait will get used over next 2 weeks on upcoming trapping job. I have enough on hand to last a long time. Rusty kept about 10 gallons of it too. Haven't talked to him in a while...he's in Idaho now Im told.

Swamp, that concoction sounds like an excellent change up bait/ lure. Might want consider putting some on the upcoming T-man auction. Good luck on the upcoming trip! I may just do that for the auction. Thanks for the idea!

Patrick, I’ve used a few of your lures. I’m guessing your bait is just as effective. Sounds like a day of fun where my wife makes me strip in the laundry room before coming into the house.
When I feed my foxes and dump pee, she knows I’ve been there. Im about to head out to shed now and spike some bait and lure with skunk. My squaw is already fussing at me. At least I now have a mask lying around here somewhere so maybe the essence will not stick in my nostrils, moustache, and beard.....lol

When I feed my foxes and dump pee, she knows I’ve been there. John, The couple of lures I made (and sold some of) were both bobcat meat based. One was well aged ground meat and loosley based on the old Nelson solution formula with a few extras I added including mild skunk. Called this one SwampWolf4. The other was ancient aged bobcat meat that was pureed. I added some catnip and other "catty" ingredients for use as a rub set lure. This one is called K9 Gravy due to its appearance, but it is more a target bobcat/grey fox lure.

Swamp I keep all my deer livers and hearts, and ground with meat trimmings from processing. It's a killer bait. I also did a couple runs of the emptied stomach a few years back. It's a good one.
I changed jobs last year and was so busy with work I didn't set a trap the entire season. That changed recently as I set my first trap (3 traps to be exact) in 2 years this past Saturday. Had a first night coyote, and got me fired up to hit these last 3-4 weeks of our season pretty hard.
Keep us updated on your trip, that looks like a lot of fun. I always enjoy your ride alongs.
Happy Trapping . . .
