The skull pan star and the oc ltd trap are both identical traps ,only difference is the pan stamp. This is the transition trap (oc ltd), Hope snake collector can add a little more to this.

dks, You are correct. Oneida Community came out with the Stat in 1896, their first underspring trap, to compete with Blake & Lamb. In 1901, Oneida Community did away with the Star name and put a circle stamp on the pan of what was their Star trap, both single and double spring traps.

Shortly after changing the name, the jaws were changed from flat steel to cast. Also, the pan post was changed and the single base rivet was changed to a double rivet.

These circle stamp, Oneida Community underspring trap were made until 1911, when the name was changed to Oneida Jump and all sizes became single spring. I have 9 variations of the O.C. Ltd. single spring and 12 variations of the double spring. When I get the time I will start a new post with all of the variations and changes.

trapped4ever, that trap has a humped cross, which is the May 28, "07 patent, the last model before the Oneida Jump. It also has the spring tab that goes through a slot in the end of the base, that is the Nov. 15, "04 patent. Both of those dates were on the pan.

snakecollector,
So this trap would have been made between May 28, 1907 and sometime in 1911? I finally retired it a while back, after many years of service on the marten line. It certainly was a perfect trap for marten, and has produced an awful lot of marten, since I acquired it. The pan may possibly read a bit better, if it wasn't coated in waxed.....

I have a BUNCH of the cast jaw #1s like you showed, some after the V's were cutout too. Many of them have good, clean deep stamped pans. It seems like in that Era the pans were stamped deeper? I am still using a quite a few of those cast jaw #1's on my marten and mink.

Thanks for all your shared knowledge!!!

I think maybe I misunderstood your post, snakecollector? Did the pan stamp progression change to read Oneida Jump, instead of Oneida Community, even though the Oneida Community stamped traps still said Jump inside the circle stamp? Or were they called underspring, until a name/ term change, to Jump in 1911, so any with the term Jump anywhere on the pan stamp, are post-1911? Thanks for the clarification, since I wasn't sure if I was understanding you correctly....

The earlier picture I posted was a #0. Here are the stamps on some of those later model, cast jaw #1's I mentioned..... like I said, they are stamped very deep. I always wondered if this was normal for this model, like maybe the pan stamp process changed techniques......?
Thanks again for the education, I appreciate the time you put in to this!!
Looking forward to the info you mentioned posting later, showing the variations and changes. smile

Trapped4ever, Here is the progression of the Oneida Community underspring trap pan, there are many variations of each pan with different patent dates and wording, but this is the main layout. This is only for the small size, single spring traps, larger size double undersprings have square pans.

Star-1896 to 1900, round pan first, only for a short time, then pear shape two hole pan.

Oneida Community circle stamp, two hole pan-1901 to 1906 , The word "Jump" was added to the pan about 1906.
[Linked Image]
Oneida Community, circle stamp, solid pan-1906 to 1911
[Linked Image]
Oneida Jump, solid pan-1912 to 1914 , This is were all sizes became single underspring.
[Linked Image]
Oneida Jump, "V" cut out pan-1914 to1925, under Oneida Community production. Animal Trap Company continued to use Oneida Community stamped pans for several years after they bought out Oneida Community before stamping them with their name.
