What are your recommendations for a good coyote trapping hammer? Have owned a 3-in-1 (Groundhog) and wasn't a fan (too light), Cold Creek 3# hammer (and the blade bent), and Sodbuster and the head came off. Any one use a Freedom Brand Pro Trapline Hammer? Did you like it?

I like mine, have had it for several years now. If you dont have have to chisel through frozen ground or drive stakes, I really like a masonry hammer for remakes or sets im running drags or extension cables on.

The freedom pro is a good hammer,if they made it with a straight tang it would be excellent,For the last year I have been using a 6# Estwing hammer with a straight tang Stalker from NY makes them, not perfect but its a good hammer I use a Estwing rock hammer for the trap beds.

I found a local guy that welds and he welded one of the trapping hammers onto pipe for me. It's been pretty indestructible. The fiberglass and wood just do not hold up. Wrapped a couple rounds with duct tape so you don't take all the abuse metal on metal. I'm with Rick the only thing I would change is I would like the digging side to be straight instead of curved. Otherwise it's been perfect.

For really tough or frozen ground I use a 6# splitting maul for driving anchors and chopping a trap bed . It’s not pretty but will make a hole in the ground. I highly recommend safety glasses or goggles when chipping frozen ground. I’m with wade on the pipe handle , I found a piece with a knurled section for better grip .

I carry 2 hammers in my setting gear and a ax in my truck if needed. I use the bigger one to loosen the soil and a brick or rock hammer to sculpt the bed to fit the trap.

I use an estwing blacksmith hammer with a 3/16" thick digger blade I welded on. I don't remember exactly how much it weighs, 3 or 4 pounds.

This or a Tomahawk framing hammer. I have been thinking about this very thing, I have the cheap sledge with bar on the back, but I think the tomahawk hammers will work a lot better personally. There are guys who use them for 50+ years, and although they look worn, they still work just as great as the day they bought them.

My Sodbuster is going on 5 years now. Plus I use it as my tension tester, lol. Set the handle on the pan and as soon as I release pressure the trap should fire…right at 3 pounds.

Estwing big face masonary hammer long. Most incredible set building hammer I have ever used. So so at driving stakes but makes building step downs and trenches easy. Also have a big est wing with a digging blade. Always do my digging with the masonary hammer. Make sure it’s the big face long. Great hammer. Lately been using a estwing wood splitter hammer to drive stakes. Another good hammer.

I'm itchin' to see a coyote twitchin'.

More trappin' and less yappin'.

The Freedom Brand hammer hurts my hands. Sharp edges above the handle. Needs wrapped with paracord over handle and up towards the hammer head.
