I Came across this trap and bought it as a “user”. I know there are a pile of variations of Newhouse longsprings, and I’m planning to modify this to add some pan tension. Before I do I just want to make sure I’m not ruining something others would like to save. It is a Newhouse #3. Pan says “ Newhouse Oneida Community with a hard to read patent date (I assume it’s a patent date). Spring is stamped Newhouse Oneida Community. Chain is not original. I’m guessing it’s nothing special. Thanks for your help.

You might double check that stamping on the springs to make sure there aren’t any other markings. If necessary you might take an old toothbrush and a squirt of WD 40 to clean the springs to make them a bit more readable.

I don't see anything special about this trap. You are correct, #3 Newhouse, Sept. 26, 1911 patent date on the pan. Off set on the jaws is from the wire wrap, not factory. And, chain is not original.

Well if Snakecollector doesn’t see anything special then there probably isn’t anything special, as you have looked at more traps than I will in a lifetime. Pretty neat that we have a hobby where you can pickup a used item over 100 years old and just put it to work.

For the bit of trouble it is, ide just hang it up and used better gear. It’s pretty hard to beat even cheap coil springs like Duke. Least you will have your animal.

Well it’s in the ground now, so we’ll find out. As for cheap coilsprings, I have lots of Montana #3’s (not cheap) but I’ve enjoyed using the longsprings lately. They sure do bed a lot better for me. In fact, I caught a cat last week about a week after the season closed with a #3 Montana on one foot and #3 Victor LS on the other and it wouldn’t have gone anywhere with either trap. The Montana did appear to be a little easier on its foot, though. After I released it it ran under my truck and watched me for about 10 minutes then skedaddled. The picture in traps I too big to post but here it is under the rig. I am hopeless. At posting photos right side up.
