It obviously has happened but I'm not sure freely would be the way I'd describe it. I've never seen a dog that likes a coyote or a coyote that likes a dog and it seems worse during breeding season. I would think it would be even more rare with wolves. I've never caught a coyote around that really showed and characteristics that might make you think th6e had domestic dog anywhere up close. So I don't think it freely happens here.

I seen a wolf north of where I live 5 or 6 years ago. It was running across a cornfield. It was no coyote, way to big. Reintroduction would be a disaster, especially if they get a taste of livestock.

That was my first thought on seeing the pics also.

Since wolves were removed off the endangered species list, there are no regulations on them in Nebraska. You can take them anytime of the year just like coyotes.

Same here. That forehead screams DOG to me.
Not saying it isn't a wild critter just that it looks like a lot more domestic than wild.
The forehead is one of the most distinctive differences between the two animals.

I can't speak to coat colors but I know these guys below have likely never seen a dog in their former lives. Their ancestors 50 generations back could have I suppose. I have known one animal that I knew for certain was a half wolf/dog. Miserable critter. Couldn't bark.....just sort of wailed. A real handful in a dog team. His name was Ripper.....for a reason.

Loosegoose, take from us Yoopers, cheeseheads, and Minnesotans. The LAST thing you want in Nebraska is wolves. Our deer are gone!!! The beaver in my area are gone!! The wolf population is out of control!!!! The countless bear hounds killed, cattle, etc. I moved to the U.P. 20 years ago, and what the lawmakers in our capital of Lansing have let happen to our wildlife up here is disgusting! The UP was rich with traditions, camps, gatherings , passing down things from one generation to the next. Now, nobody comes “ up north” anymore during deer season. In 2014 I had pictures of 16 shooter bucks throughout the season. This year…. 2 , from September 1st through December. I can keep going but I won’t, we’d be here all day.

It is unfortunate for those areas that are starting to get wolves on the landscape but in reality it may be the only way that people can become convinced that they are not endangered and do not need highly restrictive federal protection. By being large and easily traveling long distances and very territorial it is a matter of time b4 they occupy a lot more land area.

From what I have heard about all the wolves? that have been DNA tested in ND, they all came back dog cross. You would think with wolves being common on three sides, Canada, MN and MT some one would catch a real wolf, rather than a cross. Is it that most wolves in the lower 48 are crossed, or does the ND G&F not want to deal with it? I have seen pictures of some and will admit they looked crossed up. Here they are release if alive.

Dogs evolved from wolves so to me why would there not be DNA that would trace wolves and dogs as highly related? Some areas probably just have longer seasons with less dogs in the more recent history.
