I’m going to tan a couple pelts and was wondering if it’s safe to do in a basement. Basement is unfinished but I’m told the tan/pickle will stink up the house.

You can tan in the basement-should be no unpleasant smells unless you are tanning large amounts of skunk, mink etc.
If your pickle starts to smell, its time to neutralize it and dump it and start a new pickle.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

I just tanned 10 beaver, 3 rats, 1 coyote, 1 fox, 1 coon and an otter in my basement. Pickle didn't smell at all. Tanning smelled up the basement for a day or so but after that fine.
