Andy Weiser once stated that he mixed 50/50 dry dirt and peat moss when making waxed dirt. Anyone tried this method? And results on the line? Thanks.

Not peat moss, but have tried the 50/50 mix of waxed sand and buckwheat hulls. Saw this at a coyote days demo, and it made sense. I use 5 gallon buckets out of the back of the pickup. Biggest problem with waxed sand is the weight, and the 50/50 mix is a whole lot lighter. However, as the buckets bounce and rattle around in back, the sand goes to the bottom and hulls work their way to the top. Now you no longer have a mix, but a half bucket of sand and the top half hulls.

Have never mixed two or three types of components but have tried our farmland soil (silty-clay-loam) and all types of sand (Valentine, Thurman, construction type, etc.) for waxing. The more organic component to soil, the lighter it will weigh. Sand is awful heavy but it sure is stable for a foot hold - no matter the type you use - coil or long spring. In Nebraska, our typical sandy soil will weigh 1700-1800 lbs./ cubic yd. and the loess soils in the eastern part here, about 1400 lbs./ cubic yd. so any lighter component in the mix would really help the "old back" when loading the pick-up. Zag's dream set would/will work as an all season if you set where there is grass/hay ground but so much of this state is cropland that the grass cover does not blend in and is tough to make it stick in our wind.................. the mike

I have done 60/40 with wax sand and peat moss and also 60/40 with wax sand and buckwheat hulls. I prefer the mix with the buckwheat hulls. Both methods make your wax sand go further and also lighten the load.

Has anyone tried waxed sand mixed with unwaxed buckwheat hulls?

I don’t think people wax the buckwheat hulls.

I use waxed sand. It takes less wax than dirt and beds rock solid. It’s too heavy to carry though. I trap off an atv so no biggie to carry a five gallon bucket. You can get a lot of sets out of a 5 gallon bucket. If I had to carry it, I’d use dirt instead. My conditions are tough so I have never tried mixing hulls in the sand but I have heard of it. Never heard of peat moss being mixed. Interesting thread.

The plant Curly Doc or Sour Doc is a relative to buckwheat and the seed forms in long cigar shaped tuffs on the top of the stem. individual seed is triangular in shape and about the size of hulls. It has the same water repellent characteristics as Buckwheat hulls and can be gathered locally in fields and farmsteads here. Try some with your waxed sand/dirt and see if you like it before you purchase a bag of hulls. I used it a lot before the waxing technique hit the trap forums and it was at least as good as the hulls for me........................ the mike

A 5 gallon bucket of waxed sand weighs around 75 lbs. It's awful heavy, but I use a side by side so weight isn't an issue. When making sets, I scoop out of 5 gallon bucket into a quart sized bucket. Waxed sand makes bedding a trap a piece of cake, rock solid. It works so good, I have no reason to try anything else.

Yep, work smarter not harder. I work out of 5 gallon buckets in pickup box, but scoop it out in quart containers that fit my pack. When loading the pickup it is half buckets at a time poured in to refill.
