I'm on the email list for the Monroe County invasive plant group. Lately they keep talking about an upcoming event scheduled to work on Amur maple eradication. Finally I had to google it to see what it is.

Here is what I discovered:

https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/Invasives/fact/AmurMaple.html

I don't think if I've ever seen it. Maybe I have, & just mistook it for traditional maples.

The Monroe Co consortium sure is doing a lot to combat invasives. I don't know if Monroe Co is more invasive infested than other areas or if the MCISWG is just that good at identifying & reporting nuisances. It could have something to do with Ft Mcoy.

I seem to recall seeing it advertised as a hedge.

Lowes sells thousands of Amur Maples all over the US. Many nurseries and catalogs sell Amur Maples too. The suburbs around here have them between the sidewalk and street in most neighborhoods. They only get about 20' high and 20' wide.

They do make nice hedges, I've taken care of many of them for customers. I actually wanted to plant some myself and then noticed they are on the DNRs do not plant list so I obviously decided against it. I have not seen them become a problem but I suppose they could become one in the right circumstance.

WI is pretty good at combating invasives. You see all kinds of parsnip here in MN, but you hit the border with WI and is gone. MN is too busy embezzling the lotto money and will not work to get rid of invasives. Apparently WI has not got that disease in the Govt yet.

I've never seen it either. And I do spend lots if time fighting the invasives on my property.

You got that right. Invasives are so time consuming.

Do many of you tackle invasives in the winter? I think it can be tough depending on snow depth. Plus some herbicides probably don't work well in winter. Pulling plants out of the ground is tougher in the winter, and it is tougher to identify plants without leaves

As an invasive- I wonder how digestible it would be for deer browse? That would help prioritize its removal compared to other invasives. Honeysuckle gets browsed albeit not preferred and Buckthorn is a diuretic and nasty.

I don't know Eagleeye. You're right about honeysuckle & that nasty buckthorn. Those 2 keep me plenty busy each year

We plant it around here. Then again, we're not too choosy about trees and other wood stock. They break up the space...

At the invasive workshop I was at today at Fort McCoy they were talking quite a bit about their disdain for amur maple. I actually saw a couple nurseries this year selling it.

I keep a few Amur Maple around my bird pens. Never had one to sprout anywhere else.

When I worked for Asplundh it was a common planting for replacement of boulevard trees that were taken down.
