Started 2 new mineral sites today using Walnut Hill trophymax deer mineral. I’ve never used their products before. They are trying to complete against Lucky Buck. I have a trail cam on one site to see how long it takes them to find it and how much activity it gets [Linked Image]

I put out a couple protein blocks that have a mineral pack in them about a month ago. Thinking the blocks would last longer that the pellets I'd been feeding them. Deer won't touch them. Pick pieces of remaining pellets all around them but won't touch blocks. Even covered outside with peanut butter and molasses to get them started. Deer wouldn't even touch molasses or peanut butter. Our deer must not be very hungry. I even put out rock salt. Not much intrest.

Deer really start hitting the salt when things green up.

Give it time. If it's good quality mineral, something is going to eat it.

I put a 40# bag of water softener salt in a small depression last spring.

By mid summer and 1 more bag the deer had a 3' hole about 8' in circumference dug up.

The deer kept after it until Sept./ Oct.

True statement by 330- some of the biggest bucks in our area get shot during the wettest years when forage is chock full of minerals, in addition to mineral rich soil counties that continually produce quality deer. I believe there are benefits to supplementing minerals over a longer window ie; 3-5 years, minerals that contain Dicalcium Phosphate for promoting lactation and helping with digestion- sodium helps with the intake of beneficial minerals like DiCal that would probably not be desirable alone because of bitterness. We usually have one mineral station per 40 acres and place minerals end of March and replenish in August.

Kelp is what I would recommend. We're not allowed to feed mineral to Deer if I understand the regulations correctly. I live outside the corn belt and don't have mineral rich soil.

Wish we could place minerals here in Wisconsin during the off season. Would be an easy way to give them a leg up and keep an eye on antler growth and herd size.

Got to water it in to the soil before they will use it. A good rain will do it of course. It only took a few days before the deer here started using mineral when I put it out last summer but I put out Black Magic that has an attractant. I did make a point of putting it away from trees I didn't want the salt to kill. Also don't put it in a path you want to travel because there will be a hole developed there.

We pour it on an old hardwood stump, not rotten, near water, they will continue to lick the stump after the salt is gone, pour some water on it when you put it out, we usually put it out in spring and summer.

$50 to $60 for 200 lbs . Nothing is better, cheaper or more beneficial in my opinion.

50 lb stock salt
100 lb trace mineral salt ( unmedicated )
50 lb di-cal

Put one one those brown mineral/salt blocks out and the deer never touched it. It eventually dissolved away. The next Spring the manager calls me and asked f I knew what the heck was “digging” a hole where that block was, lol? Deer were tearing up that spot so bad we eventually had to fill it in.

If you really want the salt to dissolve quickly pour apple cider vinegar on it. Apple cider vinegar helps the deer absorb the minerals better.
