A couple bounty beaver today. Ice finally got off some of the ponds and ditches. Both around 40#. Only second black beaver I’ve caught and the other one was reddish color. Had a good partner helping with the set up on them. Still have 3-4 more to go that levy district wants gone. These two and the ones left are educated. Tryed catching them early season before freeze up and didn’t have enough water to drown them. . Switch to short chain 750’s on drowning rods. [Linked Image]

Gonna load up with snares and more 750’s this morning and do some blind sets for these educated boys and girls. Only had 1 yesterday. Still have 5-6 in different water holes to get out and they are extra spooky.

Thank you St.Paddy. After 2 years of trying ever set I knew how to make to catch a old educated beaver I named 3 toes, SUCCESS. Caught him behind the front legs with a snare. Bad news is I educated another beaver in a different drainage ditch by clipping a back toe off him in a blind set drowner rod 750. He probably won’t come out of his hole for a week. [Linked Image]

It's always neat to see the color variation of different animals in different areas. I've trapped all over NC from the coast to the mountains and have only caught 8 or 9 black beaver. They all came from a 15 mile radius of a certain section of river where I live now. Good catch.

Here's one I snared a couple years back....

Great pic!! Didn’t realize they are alive when snared. Does that present a problem?

Most all my beaver are alive when I snare them. Just give them enough cable to get back into the water away from dogs, coyotes, and bobcats and they're gonna be waiting on you when you get there. Very little fur damage using this method and helps preserve the location. Just make sure you have your snare swiveled well. Not just a snare swivel on the end.

I modified a few snares to make the tail of the cable roughly 8 inches. I attach a swivel to a drowning lock (either rod or cable). First night I tried this we had one patiently awaiting for us 5’ under water the next morning! Only problem was that it was a trial run, so I’d only cut down one snare… came home and made a dozen more. Always hate when I don’t have a cable for a remake on me during a check!

Every time I had to drag a pair of 40 pounders up a high bank I could have swore they each felt more like 60!
