Can I use Road Kill Deer as a "good" Bait for Mink?
Or what do you recommend as the best bait for Mink?
I have seen some post that say to use fish, I just think the Racoons are gonna tear up my mink sets before the mink can get to it.

I don't know if there is a lot you can do as far as bait wise to keep coon out of your pocket set, they are always going to investigate any smell. You can try keep the trap way up in the hole but that doesn't always help but I don't know if I necessarily like that because I want to catch the mink that doesn't commit. Also, you could try to put some DPs up on the bank to try to keep your mink set working. I think the mink is attracted more to the hole and the bait will help them maybe work it longer I can't bring myself to put a trap in an empty hole grin As far as bait I've tried all kinds of things from commercial baits to chunked carp but I actually like jack maceral I buy a few cans and put it in another container and break it up and put a stick full up in the hole and I like to have a few flake fall out in the water or edge of the hole for eye appeal its inexpensive and easier to deal with than frozen fish. Then I use salmon oil mixed with uncut shellfish oil I squirt up the bank but not in the hole but I don't think any of that will help with your coon problem. I don't know about the road kill deer, I think I would just get numbers of sets out and deal with the coon. Thats my opinion and the system I use.

Thanks for the Coon info
Right now Coons are paying ZERO so I wish they would go on vacation because they sure make a mess of a nice set.
I was growing Jumbo Pumpkins once and a buddy said to try this Fish Fertilizer, well the Coons destroyed my pumpkin patch.
I wish the price would come back like when i was a kid, they went as high as $35 and are easy to catch.

Another option would be to put them on a drag or a slide wire to drown them or get them away from the set.

Jack mackerel in the can is a good mink bait or catch some carp and steak them palm size to keep the voles from hauling it off.

When mink prices were better, all the big numbers mink guys here would net, snag trap and spear suckers during the spring runs and freeze them up whole in burlap bags for use in the fall as a premiere mink bait. Each frozen sucker was chopped in 3 when taken out for use as mink bait..

When I trapped mink in the UP, I used smelt for bait, and it worked well. As a youngster trapping with dad, he used bait shrimp with good success. It was cheap and readily available.

I save my smelt heads and use them. Spring sucker run is on around here right now. Easy and fun to catch I'm going in the morning.
