Upon purchasing ammo over the last 10 years, I have acquired enough that I have a concern as to storage safely away from the house.

What and where would be a good and safe area to put up this stuff? And I'm not sending to anyone on here.

Thanks

vacuum sealed 'battle packs' with an oxygen absorber inside and then in a good ammo can with oxygen absorbers inside and placed so that it does not contact any dirt or you can glue up some larger pvc pipe and use it in a similar fashion. I would put any 5.56/.223 for a 30 round mag on stripper clips with 9 per clip...I have some of those that are 'extra' if you need any.

Speaking for myself only I'll say this. Anybody that has enough ammo to really store it will tell you ammo is heavy. I don't know your age now or how old you will be when/if you have to move or use it.

So to that end put it in something small enough to carry yet big enough too serve its intended purpose. I just within the last 3 to 7 months went from 5 gal. screw on lid paint buckets to 2 gal. paint buckets with snap on lids. With handles. Each with a large moisture absorbing pack, available from Brownells. One wrap of Gorilla duct tape around the lid as a seal.

Leave all in original boxes and never handle it. I use old steal truck bed tool boxes, reinforced with barn door hasps with bolt cutter resistant locks. Kept in a building away from my house. 3 keys. 1 on my key chain in truck, 1 on wife's key chain in her truck, 1 hidden where we and in laws know about.

As has been seen it will not loose value, you can never have enough or to much. Your close friends will love you come hunting season. Those without forethought can go pound sand. Good on you for reaching this, as I see it "milestone". I gave some away during our last shortage by the way. JMO.

If worried about theft - store first in the pantry, 2nd in a family bathroom under the sink

If fire is what you're worried about the bullets act like fire crackers. The primer blows out case come apart but other than noise are low risk since there not contained in a barrel to build up pressure and send the bullet.

Just store mine in ammo cans in a 75° or less room. Heat and moisture is bad for it.

but those casings to make a neat sound when they go buzzing by your head ---- when I was studying to be a fireman we had a ammo store go up -- complete loss as expected but some of those casings ended up 25-30 yards away.

Same as Dave P lots of WW 2 and Korean war ammo in metal and wood boxes some has green oxidation but works fine.

i am shooting 30-06 I bought 30 years ago and notice no difference in point of impact at 100 yards

stored in an ammo can with a gasket , loaded in the can on a dry day and best if kept in a climate controlled space

I like these for shot shells , https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T4XL2MO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

shot shells are much more sensitve to moisture and humidity than pistol or rifle rounds

22lr is also humidity sensitive

the MTM crates have gaskets and hold 18 boxes of 25 in 12ga

a brick of 22lr taken out of the box laid in a vacuum seal bag in a single layer vacuum packs well and stores flat , haven't opened those yet to see how they are but they have to be as good if not better than the stuff stored in a ammo can alone

GCP, nice box. Great price. But for myself I was thinking a lot about weight. That box will tote ~50 boxes of handgun ammo. Now don't get me wrong I'm not above that but I'm not gonna pack it very far, very fast, at my age. That's why when the wife asked me if I wanted those paint buckets I jumped on'em. They hold about 20 boxes of 45 or 38/357, and they are square and did I mention free.

I first looked at the used mil. stuff but at 35 or 50 bucks a pop I said nope. I'd rather buy more ammo, I can always use new once fired brass.

Guess I'll just chalk it up to me trying to justify my answer. Good luck all.

My answer assumed that since the op did not want it in the house he would be burying it.....

Spam cans of milsurp ammo from the early 40's, nothing in the can but ammo, paper wrapping. Stuff shoots like it was made yesterday. I date all my ammo, that I buy. I was gifted some very old shotgun and rifle ammo, a Coleman cooler full. No idea on storage conditions, I assume in the cooler. What I have shot so far seems fine.

hard to argue with free , and what ever works for you , roll with it

I sure with I had bought a lot more metal 50 and 30 cal cans back when I was getting them for sub 10 dollars I htink some of my 30 cal cans were 3 for 15 and 50 cal cans were 2 for 15

these days most of my pistol ammo stores as components jugs of powder and bricks of primers , as I make it it goes into 30 cal ammo cans

what doesn't exist as components just goes in 50 cal cans in boxes I bought some cans back before the price went crazy

the MTM AC-11 makes a good size big enough to get a fair amount of ammo in but not get too heavy and the handle folds down flat so they stack well
I was getting them locally for 13.95 still have the price tag on some of them. I see they are 16.39 online currently https://www.amazon.com/MTM-Ammo-Can-Storage-AC11/dp/B003ISKM9K

at first I was a little worried about plastic , I bought some Plano 30 cal cans and they were good , even got some of the Harbor freight 30 cal cans that are ok

the MTM seem to be a sturdy quality product for plastic they keep the moisture out and stuff organized , Label well a stack of cans that all look the same without labels is a good way to find several bricks to 22lr you forgot you bought 10 years ago oops at least they are still good because they were sealed up tight.

I am trying to figure out why you would not want the ammo in the house. If my house catches on fire, I am getting out ammo or no ammo.

I will add, I do inspect the seals on ammo type cans. The ones I relocate for longer storage I spray with silicone like Camp Dry. I have large ammo cans, when full they cannot be lifted alone. Those I have set onto a chunk of plywood cut to size of can, I then screwed castors to the bottoms. Those are stored under a bench in a lockable mouse proof room that I keep tents and seasonal outdoor gear in, (unheated)
