Is it beneficial to rehydrate a fleshed and dried coon and then salt it once or twice prior to the pickle? I saw a fella in a tanning video do it that way. I had thought that fleshing and drying on a board, rehydrating and going right to the pickle would be sufficient.

Extra steps.Just add salt to your re hydration soak if you want to.You will wash it out later anyway when cleaning, de-greasing and rinsing before pickling regardless of which method you use to salt.

Thanks Boco. I've got 3 rats, 3 mink, and two possums going right now using your method (2 batches). I know you said you will reuse the pickle and the tan if the ph is good. How many batches are you comfortable reusing?

The pickle is good until it gets dirty or smelly,as long as you keep the ph correct.
As for the tan,I only use it a couple times-normally larger skins first then a few weasels, squirrells or other thin skinned pelts for a second use then discard.
