I was shooting my Smith and Wesson 586 this weekend and the barrel came loose. It is a older gun 1986 I think. I was actually just shooting some 38 special when it came loose and had only shot 6 pretty light .357 that day. Has anyone had this happen or heard of this happening?? I thought it was really strange. It was a comerativetive gun so maybe they thought no one would be shooting it? It looked like it hadn't been out of the display box when I got it a couple years ago. Anyway it's headed to S & W for repair just wondering if anyone has had this happen?

Had a 686 used at work Never heard of that issue. My oldest daughter bought a 617 and had problems. We sent it back. S+W made it right for no charge but don’t expect it back soon it took 2 months if I remember correct but they do stand by their revolvers. Sold my 686 and still regret it . If it been 6 in instead of 4 I would have kept it

Dang hope it doesn't take that long. Was hoping to get some more shooting in. It's been a long winter. I guess as long as they stand behind it it will be ok.

I've shot a lot of smiths and never even heard of that happening. If it was, and only if, it was sold to you as something special to make it more valuable than a stock revolver I might be concerned that someone has counterfeited it in some fashion. I can almost guarantee you smith would never let a gun leave the factory substandard because they thought it wouldn't be fired. They do have one of, if not the best customer service departments in the country. Contact them, they may send you a shipping label and I know they will give you proper instructions for sending it to them. Can't speak to turn around time, I know when I send one it's going to take some time. But I've never sent one for a repair. Best of luck.

No that was never implied at all when I bought it. It looked like it had never been fired and I have shot some pretty healthy 357 through it last summer. Yes on the customer service as I called and told them what had happened and they sent me a prepaid shipping label to send it for warranty work. No questions asked other than S/N. And problem.

Wife had it happen on a Taurus 60, .38.

" Front sight is bent!"
Hands it to me.

" No, barrel is loose"

I hand tightened it and front sight went to.far the other way!

Took it to local gunsmith.

For $50, he fixed barrel, lightened trigger pull, and gave me invaluable advice;
" Don't buy a Taurus!"

I was told that before buying a .44 Taurus

But would have never expected it from a Smith

My brother in law gave my 11 year old a h&r .22 for Xmas and the barral came loose. I took it apart and snuged it up but I suspect it's out of time.

It shoots high right anyway and I don't trust it enough for him to shoot it. If it were not a gift it would all ready be gone. I did just buy the boys a single 10 and rugger mark 2 government target the week before he gave that to them.
I have never had an h and r that's been problem free. Had 3 long guns the pin that holds the transfer bar in break. Pull the hammer back go to shoot and click not bang and dead deer. H&r turn around on the repair was going to be 2 to 3 months. So gone all deer season. Instead I paid a local Smith and got it done while I wait on my youth 357.

Dont some of the smiths have a pin in the receiver that goes in to the barrel to keep that form happening? That sounds to me like the designer made a mistake, I would think the twisting action of the bullet going down the barrel should be in the direction to tighten it. just a though........jk

First of all a 1980s Smith should not even be mentioned on the same thread as a Taurus anything.

Second, when that gun left the factory, nobody knew it was destined to become a commemorative so that is definately not the issue. All guns are made to be shot and are manufactured as such.

I own many Smiths and even though they are very high quality, they occassionally have problems too. I would take it to a gunsmith and have him remove the barrel and check the threads and then reinstall and properly torque it.

I bet you never have another problem.

I think they stopped pinning the barrels in 1982. I think it was a better design but added to the manufacturing cost.

I'm pretty sure they knew it is stamped 212 out of 500 and has some gold writing on the barrel. I'm sure it's not the issue but it had a different problem also where if I tighten the yoke screw the cylinder won't swing out almost like the bolt is to long. So it just didn't seem to have the mechanics working as well as all other smiths I've had. Anyway I told them about this and I'm sure they will fix it as well.

I've got one of these in .44 mag from the original Dan Wesson Co. Hundreds and hundreds of rounds through it. Bought mine with a 6" barrel but later bought a 10" and an extra barrel shroud. One open sighted, one scoped. The barrel/cylinder gap can also be adjusted when assembling.

Not sure why the new Dan Wesson only offers .357. The guns are VERY accurate.
