If you are removing beaver out of season for a land owner can you keep the beaver fur/caster. If you catch a incidental muskrat can you keep it?

No on the rat, not sure on the technicallities of the beaver parts on private land.

No and no. I was told, any animal taken outside of season has to be left at/near catch site. I have done a few jobs on private land where the DNR picked up beavers I had trapped for state training/demos.

Thanks trapperkeck, that is what I thought. I saw a MN guy with pictures of beaver and rats he caught today doing nuisance work in MN on another site. He was asking what to charge for his work. I told him I did not think he could keep them in MN and he said he was doing the DNR a favor by trapping nuisance animals. I ask if that made it legal and he said he could. The beaver season is open in ND year round , so I could keep beaver. But you can not keep rats, even if they were incidental's during the off season. I really like people that you try to help, and they tell you to take a hike.

We can keep incidentals here as long as we fill out a permit to posess out of season on line. All the fur we catch in season is recorded in harvest reports and submitted at season end-if you are several pelts over on a species you need to account for it. That is how incidentals are accounted for. Lots of different regs in different jurisdictions regarding incidental and or over quota/out of season catches

Do you think CO's are stupid? It is not hard to tell if someone is doing that. I do not care if the CO is stupid, that should not change whether it is legal to keep the muskrats and beaver in MN when the season is closed. It has nothing to do with Canada and reporting all your fur. I ask a question about MN. I did not ask if it made sense to throw them out. I ask if they were legal to keep them in MN. Thanks Calvin. That is how I thought it was.

I am not answering you original question directly just participating in the flow of the convo, and pointing out what would stop someone from intentionally targeting rats when trapping nuisance beaver-like you postulated. And if you are a poacher(not you personally),its just a matter of time before you get caught.

Other states have a spring rat season and don't seem to have a problem. Some states have a year round beaver trapping too. No permit ever required to trap nuisance beaver anytime of the year. But the question was about MN.
