Guess this is for the ADC guys or those that get paid to trap year round. Do predators (coyotes, etc) have summer time patterns vs winter time patterns?
I know everyone will respond to “set on sign” and that would be my first choice as well. But, I trap areas that have grass covers roads and even two tracks.
I’m back at a property I hit back in Jan/Feb and set all my usual hotspots I’ve found after a few years of trapping this place during the winter, and nothing. I even have cameras up and not getting any pics.
We are heading to the beach this coming Monday so we’ll trip everything and reset once we get back. We plan to move the cameras around before we leave. We’ve sorta got the entire property covered but there’s a few areas we can check out.
Open to all and any ideas. This is the first year trapping this place during the Summer months.

My experience and talking with a real full time coyote guy that there territory gets real small when pups are in the den and especially when momma is staying at den with them at the beginning.

Out West its very easy to find den sites Just go to water. And follow the tracks back this time of year and you will find where coyotes are denning. In the south, it is much harder . Water is sometimes everywhere in the south . IF you have limited water? Start their , and look with in 1/2 mile of their for coyote dens. Small ponds, creek branches that are almost dry, and even hog wallowing holes . These are all places I have slipped in to and caught coyotes on a drag with before. LOTS of research can go into catching coyotes in summer. NO one ever talks about these things. Use a topo map . To find places on your neighbors land that could hold water. Then figure out how that you can use this info. Setting on sign is a given. BUT who are you setting for?? Most dont think about that ? IF I see large tracks and small tracks THIS time of year around a mud hole I know its a male and a female . Most people dont think = track size . Sure , a juvinile male and a regular female have the same size track. BUT if I see small tracks, and large . I will set up on the female.

Don't know if u have mulberries down there but around here coyotes and every other animal gorge themselves on them when they are ripe. Coyotes will leave droppings around the area if they are using that tree. Aren't ripe here yet. I'm seeing lots of bugs in coyote droppings here right now. Any fruits that might be ripening there might be a place to look

I just picked up a new property to trap, when I rode it I could find very little sign on the roads. Several of the club members told me that they had coyotes on camera and where they would see them. I live market trap and only really get to set and Fri. Sat. Night and pick up Sun morning. So I went and put out some bait sites last week using dog food and used cooking oil and had several of the holes dug out . I set a couple traps and caught 2 the first night. I do have a couple other properties that I trapped in the late winter with success and this time of the year there seems to be a lot less sign .

Funny you mentioned the dog food, my son and I discussed that today as well. Of course I imagine every coon and possum within a mile would be all over it as well seeing how that’s what we use as bait in the DP’s.

If you have large ag fields (peanut and cotton fields) where your trapping.....that is where they are. The food is there...along the field edges....rabbits, rats, berries, fawn out in the open, etc.

The coons and possums will be legal to trap starting next month so if you go the prebait route you will at least have the ability to cut some of them off before they reach the area

Yes I do get a few of them ,but not that many as I do in the winter. I had a better response from the coyotes when i added the used cooking oil to the dog food. Our biggest problem in the south is ants when I put my bait hole in I try to stay away from visible ant beds if possible.

We have the same exact issue with ants!!!

My sons boss found out I trap so my son now traps the smaller critters at his workplace and decided he wanted to go in with me on my pay jobs. All the money goes to our out of state trip account. He’s heck on the coons and possums and learning quickly about ants too, lol. It’s pretty nice to have a trapping partner, especially when it’s your own child.

WannaBe, there’s a guy on the GON forum who has been catching coyotes in the last month and he said he put some kind of ant killer down around his sets. I don’t know that I’d have the confidence to not get refusals to try it, but it worked for him

Ok. Let me go a head and say = this ^^^^^ works. Guy I gave lessons to in Alabama is using it. He catches 100-175 coyotes a year in Alabama. Its scentless ant posion sold at Wal Mart. For anyone interesed. It works. No refusals so far

Got a name for it??? This is like one of those Saudi Princes calling you and telling you they want to give you $250 million…sounds to good to be true. This would make Southern trapping so much better. Heck, I’ll try it!
