Very cool rock! That looks nothing like the petrified wood I find in my area, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't look different in your area. My thinking is that it looks maybe like a slag or obsidian of some sort...maybe? It really does look like it has wood grain and wood color though! Heres a pic of a petrified stump from my area in central ND. Being not too far away over there in MN, I would assume yours would look fairly similar?

Yup, petrified wood. very pretty. The reason it is heavy is because of the mineralization *. * (it soaked up a bunch of heavy stuff) Charlie

Instant I saw the pic, I thought, Slag or some kind of igneous product.

My grandparents had a piece of petrified wood on their living room table. I have no idea what part of the country it came from since I've never heard of anyone finding any here. It looked exactly like that.

I would say it is petrified wood. I have a petrified wood that came from ND that looks nothing like the one DakotaBoy posted. I have a half dozen of them. I found a piece out on Rootok Island in AK too. There are no trees on Rootok and never have been.

Petrified wood comes in as many forms as wooden wood.
Yours is a specimen.
