I realize we've done snakes a couple times in the past. However, I spend a lot of time catching and working with snakes this time of year, thus they are on my mind (and I'm always fascinated). Hope you like the photos.

This is a bullsnake, pine snake, gophersnake, Pituophis catenifer. They can be quite aggressive, but are not venomous.

Common garter snake, Thamnophis sirtalis. Actually, not as common as the western terrestrial garter snake in my area. They have a very mild poison in their saliva, but have no way of delivering it to humans.

This is an adult racer, Coluber constrictor. Interestingly enough, they are really not a constrictor.

This is another picture of a racer (Coluber constrictor), showing the coloration that they have for their first year. They were once thought to be two different species.

Very nice shots, Jack.

That garter snake has such pretty red spots . None of the ones I've seen here have that colouring. As you mentioned, they must be Western Terrestrial here.

Interesting, what kind of research are you doing? Are you trapping or just searching for whatever you can find?

As a young fella growing up in Iowa I played with lots of Garter snakes and noticed the ones that displayed the red coloring were more aggressive then the ones without the red coloring.

Great pics Jack! I stopped to move a beautiful large bull snake off of the road the other day and the darned thing zipped right under the truck and crawled up on top of my spare tire. Doh! Had to pull over and extricate it. More than what I bargained for but got it safely out of the way. Hate seeing those big one squished.

Jack your pine-golpher look like Wisc Fox snake or what alot of people here call Pine snake 99% of the time. Our Wisc pine snake can rattle its tail like a rattler becuase of its construction.

When I was up in Kansas I always thought a freshly shed corn snake was the best looking snake around. Ppl would call them bull snakes but they are even tempered (chill).
