[quote=plainstrapping25] Is the buried bait set and the cache set the same? [/quote

Here's a set I learned from (the late) Jim Helfrich

Dig a hole and bury a groundhog a foot (or more) deep, belly up.
When the groundhog starts to swell up with the gases inside its intestines, drive a sharp stake into the abdomen, puncturing the area.
Wallow the stake around, to create a hole allowing the gases to seep out.

Blend a trap back where the animal will approach the set.

This is a very deadly set where dirt holes with commercial lures have been used.

* A lot of guiding can be done with rocks, large dirt clods, sticks, and other natural materials when you bury the groundhog.

I have a couple coyotes that walk about 2 feet from my dirt hole traps. They just ignore them. Got them on camera not even slowing down. Well I read about this set yesterday and put one in this morning.. all I did was put a piece of deer meat under the trap. I'll let you how it turns out. I've yet to catch a coyote. I love this forum.

Right now ants are so bad we can’t even use any type of bait, even buried. Heck the ants even find lure on a stick or backing.

I sure am glad I don’t have to deal with ants like you southern folk. Sounds like a pain in the rear.

Man you have no idea. It’s bad right now. Even the ant killer we’ve discussed on here doesn’t hold them off. I’m gonna start pulling sometime this week and get ready for “Winter” trapping.

Do they go dormant during “winter” there? Or is it a year round battle? We have ants around here but by the time I start trapping they’be all been dormant for near a month. Soon as it starts to freeze most nights, usually early-mid October, they go away until sometime around mid-may

Nah, they’ll head underground during the “cooler” months. They still come out, but not as bad. Right now even putting a little lure on a 12” stick stuck in brush will have ants all over it. They are worse now than they were about 2-3 weeks ago. Time to call it quits.
