Used hanging traps to keep them from my pole beans a few summers ago. Worked well and I killed thousands, maybe tens of thousands. I'd have to change out the bags on the traps regularly because the dead beetles would start to stink. Seems like the more I caught, the more new ones came in.

traps catch what hatch the current year, milky spores will wipe them out in the treated area, however its hard on the earthworm population is what I have heard.

What are "Milky Spores" and where do you get them?

I have nothing clever to put here.

three years or so ago, I got so fed up with the darn things I bought and placed milky spore all around my very small property. conditions were good, according to the directions.

they are still stripping my serviceberry trees and a small redbud. I'm guessing they are coming from off the property.

should have saved the money.

back in the 50's, alexandria va, encouraged everyone to buy and use milky spores, they do not have a problem with them today.

Hang them bag traps by your neighbor’s place…they attract them from miles away.

I used to spray trees and shrubs for the yuppies in another life to prevent devastation from Japanese beetles. We were very busy in early to mid July, but we saved a lot of trees from being denuded. Thankfully they are not out more that 2-4 weeks. Using pesticides labeled for grubs in the Spring and in the Fall on all of the nearby turf puts a dent in their numbers the following year. The key is to apply the pesticide when the grubs are near the surface (Spring and Fall).
Beetle traps are effective for catching Japanese beetles, but for protecting your trees and shrubs? Not so much. If you do buy them, give them all to the neighbors.

Japanese beetles showed up on the wardens rose bushes a few weeks ago. They had about defoliated them, she pruned and cut them back and they left. They didn't bother tomato plants right beside roses.

I have a trap out. Works good, but the scent just attracts more. Just like you said. The manufacturer of the trap even says so.

I have used liquid sevin on my grapes for several years now. The beetles get in the grape clusters when ripe and just eat the crop up on one cultivar. It is a later grape that ripens in Sep, and the beetles come out of nowhere! There are two kinds of Sevin, one with carbolin (spelling) and one with Zeta-Cypermethrin, and the later has a PHI of one day. I would lose my crop every year if I didn't spray, and it is quick, within a couple days, there are no grapes left! Have to reapply after a rain.

Sounds like Milky spore is the best long term help.

I asked the DNR forester at an event last year and he told me not to use the bag traps. He told me I should be thankful if the neighbors do though

Some are still out but the beetle season seems to be very much on the downswing for the year

Spray with liquid 7. Kills instantly and last until a heavy rain.

When spraying Sevin the use of a surfactant will greatly increase its effectiveness and help it's staying power through rains.
